I was having a discussion with my dad last week about how my tomato plants this year wouldn't ripen. He mentioned a farmers trick, where if the plant is on its way out and the fruit won't ripen, you can take a spade and sheer off the roots at the base of the stem, shoking the plant into ripening it's fruit for that last harvest.
I see people having to harvest early due to various problems, wouldn't it be beneficial to use this method then?
Is it beneficial to do this to the plant at harvest time or just before?
