I picked up a clone of some skunk ape yesterday. I probably shouldn’t have, but I did. I haven’t heard or seen it before but I liked the purple stems it was already showing so I went ahead and grabbed it.

It’s a cross between Las Vegas Purple Kush (LVPK) x Gorilla Glue from what I researched after I already brought it home lol 😂. The flavor profile should be pretty nice. I’m looking more for a stash of quality rather than quantity.
I will be using coco as the medium for the first time and probably Lotus Nutrients for the base nutes as they need to be used up.

@TripsRabbit no, I got it from a dispensary. It really is skunk ape. Peep the name written on the tag with the date. My handwriting is nowhere that legible 😅. I imagine the date is when the clone was cut/taken 🤷‍♂️. Ironically, I almost picked up a clone of “sapsquatch” the same day I grabbed the skunk ape. The sapsquatch is another offshoot of Sasquatch, which I’m sure you already know. I was just wanting something with that “purple/grapey” flavor for my next harvest and skunk ape sounded like it would fit the bill.
I honestly thought the lineage of this strain was skunk #1 crossed with grape ape, and I’m sure some of you did too 😶. That was the reason why I grabbed it, aside from the fact that the purple stems showed amazing potential for some gorgeous flowers 😁.

On to the grow:
Plant was placed on a 5 gal bucket w/ lid to raise it off of the cold floor, only 2 70watt lm301b leds are on @ about 34 inches from the top of the clone. Temperature is between 72-81 Fahrenheit with humidity hovering around 35%. I’d like humidity up more to around 45% so I might set up my little pond fogger if I can find the dang thing. Humidity is not a big deal to me in veg like it is to some others, so if I don’t set it up it’s a “🤷‍♂️ whatever” thing to me.

Friday Oct. 23rd, after a couple days sitting in the clone container getting used to the led lights I transferred the clone to a 1 gal smart pot filled with coco coir and a few handfuls of perlite. I also lightly sprinkled some mykoz on the clones roots after I pulled it from its container and a little in the 1gal pot where it was to be repotted. Slight transplant shock but not more than a day or two. I also forgot the CalMag the first feeding in the 1 gal fabric pot, as well as the two days she was still in her clone container, so she started fading on color slightly.

Sunday Oct. 25th,
I mixed up a batch of some nutes with the following ratio:
4 cups of my DI filtered water @0.00 EC/ppm
6 drops of blue planets silica (Great Stuff & Cheap!)
About 1 tsp of Lotus Nutes Grow to get the tds to 550-575 ppm
1/2 tsp of Lotus Nutes CalMag to raise the ppm from about 550ish to almost 700ppm.
Ph adjusted to 6.0.
Very important, I always dilute my ph up or down in a SEPARATE container of 0.00 EC/ppm water BEFORE adding it to my freshly mixed feed solution to adjust the mixtures ph. If you add the concentrated ph up or down directly to the feed solution You mixed up you will see a cloud form immediately. That’s no bueno.
Plant was fed late at 10pm.
My current light schedule is 20/4 with lights on @ 5am and lights off @ 1am.

Monday Oct. 26th,
Everything looks to be in order. (Minus the mess from the previous harvest I still haven’t cleaned up, yet 🙄.) Slight twisting of the top tips (ph must be a little off) but should be corrected soon. I need to get some more buffer solution for my ph pen and recalibrate. Other than that, so far so good.

Nov 9th,
Time to induce some super cropping to get some side branching for clones. I tried my first clone cut a few months ago and was successful. I will make sure to scrape up the sides of the stem with the scissors this time, which I didn’t my first go around. Plan is almost the same as last time but with a variation or two along with the stem scraping technique.
I’ll cut, scrape, dip in raw honey, then into a small container of coco (this time red plastic cups) mixed with a 1/4-1/2 tsp of Mykos. I’ll probably take 3 cuttings. I plan on getting some rain science bags in the near future.

*by the way, the hanging temp/humidity gauge only correctly reads on the bottom. Temp on left, humidity on right. Top large negative # was to the probe that no longer works so I just hang it close to the plant by that wire 😂.

Nov. 18th:

I’m not sure if I’m watering too much or if Im lacking CalMag. The leaves look pale in color but at the same time the leaf tips are pointing down so that says nitrogen toxicity to me. The plant has been looking wilted b/c I keep trying to add in more CalMag solution. The poor plant looked like it had started to out grow its 1 gal pot, too.

The 5 gal rain science grow bag that I ordered arrived way later than the expected delivery date with the package in a questionable condition no doubt from the way the courier handled it. The root plugs that I ordered with it never came. I literally got shipped an empty package it was supposed to be in and the the package also arrived late. Yeah, needless to say I was pretty pissed off.
At least I got my order of some buffering powder for my ph pen so I’ll calibrate tomorrow as soon as I get some distilled h2o. I also got my order of some Recharge sample packs to see how that stuff works.

I mixed up a lot higher ratio of perlite into the coco coir this time to help with aeration along 6 tsp of Mykos. I noticed when I removed the root ball from the fabric pot that the perlite was only mixed well at the top with hardly any at the bottom.
I don’t know of you’re supposed to reuse fabric smart pots, but I had to make 4 different relief cuts along the side of the fabric pot to get the root ball out as a whole & throw away the pot. The roots at the bottom had started to grow into the fabric pot itself. The root ball felt a little loose, possibly even slightly cracked after retrieving the stuck roots at the bottom of it but I’m sure she will bounce back. I filled up the bag to the first node as I was expecting to cut for clones the first four branches off the main stem.

Pics before and after the transplant.

PS
I’m really liking that rain science bag. Very good quality.

What mix of coco perlite do you have?

How often are you watering?

What nutrients are you using?

How are you mixing them?

What the ppm and ph in and out?

Sorry for being lazy as I'm sure most of this is in here.

This would have been my first actual coco coir grow from start to finish, but I had to scrap this grow with the skunk ape. Unforeseen circumstances forced me to do it 😫😭. Such a beautiful plant, too. What a shame 😔.

The medium for this plant was a 60/40 blend of coco coir and perlite.
Just before flipping to flower, this plant was top dressed with earth dust dry amendments according to amendment instructions on the bag. I also add about 2 1/2 tsp of gypsum per 5 gal of amended soil. The reason why I decided to add gypsum is because it is actually calcium sulfate and plants grown under led lighting need extra cal-mag. Gypsum also conditions and loosens the soil for those really hard clay-ish soil and potting mixes so that they are easier to to work with (example will be shown on next grow log)

Up until the point I had to scrap this grow, I was basically only using ph water at around 6.5. You want 6.0-7.0 ph when growing organically, to keep the microbials alive. You also want to water about everyday if you top dressed with dry amendments like I did b/c the nutes are essentially draining down from the top and going into your medium.
*You will also want to always keep the medium moist or the microbial life will die.*

I would use 2x a week a nutrient mix of microbials, cal-mag, and a flower phase additive all mixed together, still ph @ about 6.5.

The mix was “chicken soup for the soil” from Dr. JimZ at a rate of 30ml/gal, “Cal-Mag OAC” (2.0ml/gal) & “signal” (At recommended incremental dosage on bottle depending on which week of flower) both from TPS nutrients. This mix keeps the microbial life fed, extra cal-mag if the plant needs it, and “signal” is the sauce I like to use to really bring out the terpene and trichrome production.

Me personally, I don’t water until runoff. I water just enough to where everything looks nice and moist with no dry spots. So far on my new run that I have not posted yet, I’m watering before I head to work and after I get back home if the plants need it. How much you need to water also depends on the pot size and also what types of pots you use. Right now I’m using 3 gal rain science grow pots. They are badass. But there is tons more air getting to the roots so I have to water ever so slightly more often. Just like my seedlings I have in solo cups: smaller pot container = more frequent watering at smaller volumes.
I know im way late in replying to your post, but I hope this helps anyone who reads this.
