I'm about to start my first grow and I'm not sure what kinda soil perportions I should use. I have fox farm soil, vermiculite, perlite, and peat moss I was thinking something like I part soil to 1/3 part peat moss 1/3 part perlite, 1/3 part vermiculite?????? Also how far should my 1000 watt light be from my 10 day old 6 inch og clones

I have to agree with Nine it's a great dirt. I like the Ocean Forest. And like he said perlite maybe but not necessary I used to use vermiculite but I just can't sponsor that whole deal anymore. Peat should do most of the things you are looking to get out of vermiculite.

Give Roots Organics a try alongside your Foxfarm. I like them both. Nice little setup brother.

that 1k light is prolly fine where its at. those plants look pretty young so keep an eye out. 1ks can be a bit strong and the plants will letcha know if your light is too hot/close. things will get crispy and crunchy and leafs will start to look all "burnt" for lack of a better term atm....

but it looks ok to me from that one pic you posted. as long as the temp at the top of the plant isnt any higher than 90F you should be aight with that height at this stage.

what KIND of fox farm soil did you get?
ocean forest? light warrior?
if its ocean forest, id add perlite and keep the peat and vermiculite for another grow. (vermiculite is good, straight up, for a hydro style grow but the plants will need extra support, but, i digress.....)
with ocean forest a 60%soil/40%perlite ratio isnt unheard of. its stretches the medium, but, youll hafta compensate with added nutrients.
60soil-40perlite is ok....so is 70soil-30perlite. the reason i say add perlite to the ocean forest is simple. it compacts, pretty quickly, with waterings/feedings. the perlite ensures good aeration and drainage, which, is key to good plant growth/root structure.

if its the light warrior, id prolly make a ratio of 60%soil/20%peat(or earthworm castings)/20%perlite.
its not as heavy as the ocean forest, but, can still benefit from a lil added perlite, imo.
again, mileage, and opinions vary and the only real advice that will work is the advice that best applies to YOUR situation....

hope that helps somewhat, and, we're here if ya got anymo questions or need things explained further.
i have a habit of confusing or throwin too much info at once.

hit me back if theres anything I, or any other farmer here, can help ya out wid.

I agree with cap..

Here's my .02...

I would keep that 1000w higher. Try about 2 ft above your canopy for now, til you can hang a temp probe and dial in your setup..

Since ya got a nice setup already why go uncertain about your medium.. I would go purchase a large bale of Sunshine Mix#4 and use whatever nutes you like.. If your new to growing, go grab the Age Old Organics nute line and you will be golden.. Sunshine#4 is great, fast draining, soilless, can modify accordingly.. gr8 for beginners, has buffers, etc etc.

I believe OGR uses FFOF plus 30% more chunky perlite added. You see how he does it.. !! Many use FFOF with the 30% chunky perlite, too. I also use Sunshine #4 alone.. Lately for larger plants, I use a 1:1 ratio of SS#4 to FFOF.. It's been working great..

So synopsis.. Go get a bale of SS#4 or bags of FFOF- cut with 30% chunky perlite..

Agreed. Perlite + soil is a fine mixture. Vermiculite and peat will hold too much water.
