Did an early planting of this summers outdoor autoflowers.
One each of six different seeds.
The plan is to duplicate this tray at three week intervals just to see what happens.

Planted 6 Freezeland by Thunder Bay Outdoor

They were all brought outside 1 June.
Many of these seedlings are already well into flower and I suspect they will not grow much bigger.
The few that are vegging properly look on track to make some nice plants.
The tray of Freezeland are regular photo period, and said to be early finishers. The trick will be how quickly they start flower. Come October things get cold here if memory serves.

I put the autos in rows. Wasn't very successful with survival rates and this early flower is a shock and considered a fail.
They were grown under LED, but these same lights work well for regular seed and clone vegging, so I don't know what went wrong.

The ones that have not started flowering look ready to take advantage of the abundant sun.
Evening temps still getting down to low 40s F.

I admit to having been disappointed by how many seeds I started compared to the number of pre-flowers fails.

But I went out there today and saw all the great potential that is doing well.
I'm pleased to introduce the players:

And when I say those that bolted are flowering, I'm saying some are almost done.
Fuzz is from the aspen trees.
And let's not forget these promising Freezelands.

I expect to be taking heroic actions to allow these to finish.
I think they're regulars, so sexing is always fun.

Weather has been a bit windy with threatening hale but little rain.
Still mid 40sF at night, what there is of it.
Creating shade..

13 days since the first garden shot, so I thought I'd try to show what two weeks in the arctic sun can do for a seedling.

I shifted the GHA into line with the two RGA as these three plants are the only autos that are working for me this year. Something about my LED powered nursery messed with their hormones. All my regular seedlings are perfectly normal. Strange.
I should harvest at least three of these tiny sticks, but why bother.

Rainy week.
It's been quite a while since we last had a good look at the FreezeLand.
DSCN3992

All are well with one showing an odd coloration in the new growth. May have gotten cold one night.
DSCN3993

My three star autos continue to flourish.
There is another auto seedling out there that is showing promise, so I may have four full performance plants.

Weeds (cohabitants) in the pots are squash. Their seeds made it through my worm bin and into my soil.

Put the freezeland into bigger shoes.
Even #5 seems to be growing out of that strange coloration.
On closer inspection, I noticed dark petioles too.
Looks just to be a stress response.

The auto garden is growing in places and over ripe in others.
It's time for those nicely vegging three to start flowering or there will be a problem.

I have rotated and reordered some rows to better display.

I will need to start seeing some flowering in those plants that are vegging or they will feel frost before chop.
The dwarfs that flowered early are all slowly composting.
If the two RGA and one GHA will start to flower it might just rescue this grow log.

Then there where three.
Freezeland, that is. Now I know that they were regular seeds. Males culled.

The vegging autos are vegging, and the flowered ones just continue to over ripen.
DSCN4050
Unlike most grow logs, this one is shaping up to be a record of fail.
The three big autos refuse to start flowering, as do the freezelands.
Two months from now can be winter here, so this may not be a pretty picture.

I just got back from being out of town and thought I might light dep all of these, but decided it wasn't worth the effort.
The question is, how big will the buds be when covered in snow?

What do you think is keeping the auto's from flipping??

Can you just move them all to a shed with a 600 to flip em? Better than risking a loss I would think.

Good luck whatever you do

Man I would think Fairbanks would be an ideal spot for light dep. A buddy and I did pretty good in the Prince William Sound starting the light dep at the beginning of July. I had a set net site on main bay and the whole time we were wishing we had the weather you get in the interior. Wishing you luck for a late winter.

Having lots of light in the day is great for growing plants.
But not great for light dep.
Just makes for more time in the day to suffer a light leak and maintain an environment under plastic.

I don't know why most of my autos bolted into flower while still seedlings and the others refuse to flower.
The one plant that looks like it is flowering properly, has blown out structure.
If we learn more from mistakes than success, I feel I should be learning lots.

I do note that the big vegging three are the only representatives of two seed lines, so I have nothing to compare them with.
Perhaps they are simply not autos, and all the others are 'instant' flowers.

Had to chop the runts and stranges.
Didn't mind keeping them about till I saw one of the 'more dead' harboring bugs.
Couldn't bring myself to cure any of it, though some of it may have been worthy.

The three bigger plants continue to veg to winter.
They know not what awaits them.

The survivors are all nice plants, but I don't believe any of them are auto flower.
Expecting that I will be forced to bring these in from the coming cold, I have started trimming for indoor.
Little late on topping, but I made one cut on each.
Then removed all bud sites below half height, measured dirt to top.

Record rain and cool has not put a damper on this crew.

Weather on the cold / wet side, but grow they do.
DSCN4085
Current prospect is to bring these inside in five weeks.
I have given up on anything being auto flower.
Worst case, these three are fantastic, and I don't know where they came from.
These are such nice plants, I'm looking forward to finding out what nine weeks of industrial lighting might produce.
Stay tuned.
Tell your friends.
