I don’t grow perpetually but I’d love to eventually. I’ve been reading stuff from growers like @figolus who go straight to 12/12 from seed recently.
You'll save a week on turnaround times at most and that will come with a pretty sizable list of cons that are not balanced out by pros, and even then I doubt you'll actually save any turnaround time at all.
If you flip to 12/12 when you see pre-flowers on your males (about 6-8weeks with most plants) your results will be near exactly the same time wise, only you'll have higher yielding plants taking up less space at harvest. Reliably. They will go into flower at the exact same point in time, every time. 100% always and forever lol. You will finish at the same time as well.
This applies to all photoperiod cannabis.
1212 from seed was all that I ran for probably the first 5 years that I grew. Someone came along on a forum somewhere along the line let me know that I could just wait for pre flowers on the males, or just flip in the 6-8wk mark with fem seeds.
I never went back to 1212 from seed never will.
Your mileage/results won't vary either btw. Do the side by side and you will have the exact same result. I can promise this, beyond all shadow of any doubt.
Once I get it stable if I ever stop bouncing place to place, I'll be cropping 10-14oz every 4-5 weeks between two 32x32" tents and a 5x3 veg space lol. If I ever get around to adding that third 32x32 it'll be 10 to 14 oz every 3 or so weeks from 9x3 of flower space.
Best part of running a perpetual this way is that you actually get to see fully mature expression on your plants before they flower, All of them. And if you're planning on keeping back some clone mothers of your favorite plants that's actually incredibly worth knowing,
especially when hunting multiple seeds from the same Cross or genotype. Its not just about that flower as a grower imo lol.
It's also really annoying running 1212 from seed with reg seeds, a lot of times you end up with balls busted within a couple to a few days of the pre-flowers showing, and if you're busy person or work for a living that might not be so ideal. If you're running a perpetual grow that's even more of a kick in the balls.
Having a male plant bust a nut around your females is a lot worse than having a hermie do the same thing... 1 in 10 pollen grains from a Hermie might be viable enough to create a seed, on the viable end.... But generally about
10 out of 10 male pollen grains will make a seed if they hit a pistil. A single male cluster of a few flowers busting around a bunch of females In flower indoors where air is recirculated constantly.... can seed out an entire grow.
The biggest disaster grows I've had were 1212 from seed rows where I noticed a male like five or six days too late. And thought it was just fine until a week later I noticed how many red hairs I had on the older girls breathing from the same bedroom.... Then you end up with buds ripening up all the way at 5 to 7 weeks with very little potency at half the yield you would have otherwise, and half of the weight you do have will be seed weight.
