Tips on how to use mulch on outdoor pots

hello guys, given the high temperatures I wanted to use mulch on my outdoor plants to limit water evaporation and decrease the temperature of the soil; I have both straw and pine bark of excellent quality, in your opinion which is better to use? also I have always wondered if I use mulch do I risk altering the flavor of the final product?

I've heard pine bark is very acidic, not sure if it would effect the PH of the soil but I would go with straw. I use rice hulls for mulch on my living soil both outdoor and indoor. After the grow I just mix it in the soil when I reamend .
