I've recently gone back to dirt. I'm trying Rev's TLO style. I've always used 5 gallon buckets but that doesn't get you 5 gallons of soil. By the time you move the root ball and leave space for mulch I'm guessing there's about 3.5 gallons of dirt. Not enough without nutes or using a pretty hot soil.
Can I take a one gallon pot and punch a bunch of holes in bottom and bottom sides and just sink it a couple inches? I plan on buying bigger containers but that's another crop down the road.

There are are few that do exactly what you are asking so I don’t see why not
