Cannabis plants typically stop producing trichomes as they approach the end of their flowering stage. Trichomes are the tiny, crystal-like structures on the buds and leaves of the cannabis plant that contain cannabinoids and
terpenes. The production of trichomes generally peaks when the plant is ready for harvest.
The best way to determine when trichome production has peaked is by observing their color:
- Clear Trichomes: Indicate that the plant is still maturing and not yet ready for harvest.
- Milky White Trichomes: Signify peak potency, with the highest concentration of cannabinoids like THC.
- Amber or Dark Brown Trichomes: Indicate that the trichomes are starting to degrade, and the plant is past its peak potency.
Most cannabis strains will have trichomes that reach peak maturity anywhere from 5 to 16 weeks into the flowering stage.
