Has anyone used a basic generic hydroponic system (like those used for herb and spices for the kitchen) to grow their cannabis from seeds to about 12 inch plants before replanting? If so, what system did you use, what were the results, and any takeaways from the process?

depends what your end goal is. one of those small systems might work fine for propagating clones, but vegging a plant to 12" in one of those would not be a simple thing to do. the pH swings alone would be insane imo.

you're better off saving the money that would be spent on one of those and building a basic DIY system. Like, dutch buckets or DWC.

If the plan is to transplant to soil after vegging that long, it won't work that well. Transferring hydro to soil will stress the plant out for a while considering the root structures for the different medias are completely different.

If the plan is to transplant to a bigger hydro system, then just start in the bigger hydro system to begin with.
