Thought some of my fellow farmers would give a hell yeah for this one.

Today’s verdict in favor of a California man who said his cancer was caused by exposure to Bayer AG’s Roundup weedkiller is further evidence that glyphosate, the herbicide’s active ingredient, is carcinogenic to humans, said Environmental Working Group President Ken Cook.

In the first phase of Edward Hardeman v. Monsanto Company, the jury sided with arguments and scientific evidence presented by the attorneys for Edward Hardeman that glyphosate was the cause of his non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

“Today’s verdict reinforces what another jury found last year, and what scientists with the state of California and the World Health Organization have concluded: Glyphosate causes cancer in people,” said Cook. “As similar lawsuits mount, the evidence will grow that Roundup is not safe, and that the company has tried to cover it up.”

Bayer AG bought Monsanto last year for $63 billion and is now liable for claims against it. Bayer faces more than 11,000 U.S. lawsuits alleging that glyphosate causes cancer.

Now the case before the federal district court in San Francisco will enter the second phase of the trial. Hardeman’s lawyers will present evidence to the jury, including internal Monsanto documents, that could show the company knew the dangers of Roundup and glyphosate and attempted to cover them up.

Judge Vincent Chhabria, who is presiding over this case, unsealed some of those documents in March 2017. The New York Times reported that they show how Monsanto systematically attempted to discredit scientists and independent scientific research, swayed scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency over its review of glyphosate, and even ghostwrote stories that appeared to be authored by scientists not affiliated with Monsanto.

“The decision by Bayer to purchase Monsanto, a company with a long history of environmental malfeasance, could go down as one of the worst business decisions ever made,” added Cook. “The day of reckoning for Bayer and its cancer-causing weedkiller is getting closer.”

In August, another California jury awarded Dewayne Lee Johnson, a former groundskeeper who regularly handled Roundup, $289 million in his case against Monsanto. The verdict was later reduced by the court to $78 million.

Glyphosate is the most heavily used herbicide in the world. People who are not farm workers or groundskeepers are being exposed to the cancer-causing chemical through food.

Two separate rounds of laboratory tests commissioned last year by EWG found glyphosate in nearly every sample of popular oat-based cereals and other oat-based food marketed to children. The brands in which glyphosate was detected included several cereals and breakfast bars made by General Mills and Quaker.

This judgement was determined by a jury without any scientific training.

This is a scientific question that should be answered by scientists - Not random people off the street.

So we’re too dumb to conclude that when something invades our food supply, it should be looked at? That there’s too many causal effects where people are getting cancers who’ve been exposed to this supposedly benign concoction of chemicals over time isn’t something to look at? What about the negative effects in bee colonies?
Cause if we wait till everyone is on board we might just be fucked, you know like climate change, study that till we’re all treading water, then WTF, why didn’t someone do something before this? There’s that argument...hey wasn’t that a polar bear walking by?...

If this were true then this verdict wouldn't be news, now would it?

Yup, everyone who disagrees with you is a paid shill. You cracked the code!

You don't think that round up is a disaster for environments and people?

I get that they're not scientists but the evidence from scientists atleast seems to be pretty damning from as far as I can tell.

The question has been answered by scientists, in many different studies. The problem is Monsanto has unlimited money to influence politicians, laws, educational institutions- studies etc to make it appear as tho their product is safe when many independent studies have determined that it is in fact not. Glyphosate has been found in American mothers breast milk for crying out loud.... There’s no arguing their side without selling your soul

That is definitely not the case. In general, the anti-glyphosate folks make the argument that the science is bought and paid for, not that it supports their cause. It can't be both.

https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/glyphosate-the-new-bogeyman/

Do you not understand how many places won't allow that stuff based off science? You're talking billion dollar companies with a vested interest in keeping their product on the shelves.

This was the same argument with cigarettes 20 years ago... they're not bad! Come on man...

You can go checkout Indonesia Cigarette advertisements everywhere, kids smoking everywhere... artists promoting cigarette brands... all a circle man.

Can’t forget ole B.T. Collins drinking the glass of malathion, ps dead at 52, may not have killed him outright but pretty sure it didn’t help much...

Ya'll can't seem to decide whether the science is clear that Glyphosate is safe, or the science has been bought and can't be trusted. Which is it? It can't be both.

Maybe you could start by linking us to the peer reviewed scientific evidence that supports your claim that glyphosate is a danger to consumers at the levels we consume it.

Gramps bought the farm shortly after he got home from WWII. He used round up on the farm back in the 70s 80s up till early 90s when he sold it and retired. The hole family and grand kids were exposed to it for many many years. Gramps and grama lived into there late 80s early 90s years young and both passed of natural causes. Pops and uncles and aunts are all in there mid late 60s early 70s. All are cancer free. All us grand kids were born in the 70s all 15 of us are in our late 40s late 30s years young are all alive and cancer free. Just a personal observation on the subject. I definitely do not agree with anything Monsanto does in there business practices or there products.

Bottom line for me is that I want to live a healthy life for however long. Due to my wife’s cancer and other health issues, we’ve been purchasing as many organic foods as possible for years. You can’t purchase pot in California, Oregon and probably a lot more states that haven’t been lab tested for molds, and other foreign materials. Most grocery stores now have many more produce items that are organic than in years past. It’s no surprise then that we’re as a society getting more conscious of our health and well being. Excluding roundup from its infiltration of our food chain is just a natural progression and we’ll all be better off once that happens.
PS, another note, coincidentally monsanto also made agent orange that many servicemen were subjected to without their consent...
