While looking over the many threads here, I'm seeing a couple of trends that I've noticed and wanted to see what people think and consider themselves as far as being "Farmers".
There is the standard division of Soil/Soil-less/Hydro oriented grows, but also differences like "old school", Organic, Minimalist, Tech Savvy...as well as people using specialized nutes VS general fertilizers VS home brew feedings. I guess we should include LED VS HID VS T5 as well while we are discussing things.
I consider myself old school, using basic stuff that I've used for decades I don't like the idea of change and have things pretty well tuned, but I'm always interested in hearing other's experiences and why they think they are the best for them. Even though I'm an old(er) dog, I can still learn a few tricks. Any takers?

I’m a fairly new Farmer. Pretty much self taught till I stumbled across The Farm. Actually bought a 2-1/4 acre farm in northwest Oregun. Started growing in a small 9x12 room I built on the back of my garage in my old house for storing car part an such. Always had the bug since I was a kid in the 1980s. Medical marijuana came to the state so I got a card and gave it a shot green horn and all. I love The Farm good group of peeps coming together to share there love of growing good herb. A lot of good knowledge here of all growing back grounds.

Grew a couple times in the 90’s with a heat lamp in attic with minimal bud production.
Became an annuals manager/grower for a local garden center and learned a lot about botany, have always wanted to apply the knowledge to cannabis.
I had a small outdoor grow this summer and got hooked. I have been getting everything situated for an indoor run and ready to go(minus a couple tweaks). 2X4X7, timber 300W Vero29’s, LOS and dropping seeds in a week.
My state has been medical for 6 years with no home grow. Just passed senate and assembly floor to vote adult recreational including home grow!!! F’n game changer for me. Should have final vote first week of December.
So I’d say old skool using new school technology for me.
Nice start of a thread J

I would say im a new grower with a few runs under my belt. Pretty much self taught except for all of the info and help i got on here, and YouTube videos. I cant believe the amount of knowledge and help from the people on here. My state is illegal so i have only done indoor so far. I use soil/coco mix, mh/hps and led lights , megacrop nutrients. I would like to do a full organic run after i get a good soil ammendment recipe down. There is so many different ones online that I cant decide on which one to use

While looking over the many threads here, I'm seeing a couple of trends that I've noticed and wanted to see what people think and consider themselves as far as being "Farmers".

I started in college in 77, using 2x 48" florescent gro lights in the closet. I got 1 bud out of it, about the size of a roll of nickels. A guy in town and I got to be friends and he had the most outrageous buds I had ever seen. It took him a season or two to show me his grow...which was in the same building as the local police! He showed me his setup, which was a m1000 Metal Halide light...industrial. There were no specialized lights yet. He recommended Promix and some other basic materials, and grew the most amazing buds I've encountered.
I haven't changed the recipe much other than using upgraded MH and HPS lights. Still using Promix with some composted manure, wood ashes, and general 20-20-20. I haven't changed much, nor had the need to. I have just recently tried a "specialized" blooming nute, but I don't know if its going to make much of a difference yet. I'm still raising some of the same strain that I was given back then, supposedly a Matanuska Thunderf**k strain from the Alaskan Pipeline...where the fellow that taught me worked for a few years. The plants from those seeds are not like anything I have seen recently...they are very lanky and leggy, growing 12+ ft outdoors and difficult to keep contained when done indoors.
I have continued indoors every year and despite being medically qualified, growing your own still isn't legal in this state. So, nearly 40 years later, I enjoy it more for the rest and relaxation than I do for any other reason...I rarely sold any and gave away a lot...but that's the idea, isn't it?

Great topic choice mate!
Old school with new school not being ignored as technology changes for the better in regards to farming! So so never obstinate on new stuff! Always respect old school while embracing new school. Each has its merit! And a smart farmer will use every advantage he or she can find!!

I probably should have included the frenzy factor. Growing, to me, is like a slow blues song or even mellowish hip hop...I just kind of let things go their own way with as little intervention as possible. Others seem to be like a Rave party with a thousand things, beats, and characters going on at once...Ph, Rh, Nutes, Addendums...that type of thing. I'm typically happy with a good overall result, but I don't necessarily go for the latest and greatest choices, even though they are amazing compared to the old strains. Tripled filtered vodka VS homemade Italian red type of thing...both great!

Yea I’m with ya on that! I’m a kinda like that ain’t broke! No need to mess with it kinda guy but I do experiments to see the value and very slowly adjust while keeping a bit of the skepticism in check. As some do get all bent out of shape if you question them lol. I’ve got some growers at the farm that would swear this bottle is the best and fail. Meanwhile my old methods pay the bills. Sometimes you let the young uns fail to bring them. Back to level so that now they will listen and heck combined maybe, maybe we can do something better

Good question.

I’m very new to cannabis farming. I grew up in a house with a big garden. Our landlord at the time was an old man who loved gardening. He grew tomatoes, cucumbers, flowers, peppers, all the usual stuff and a couple of fruit trees. My first gardening experience was tending to this garden with him. I was 6-7 years old and we lived there until i was about 15.

In the meantime, i was going out to my fathers hometown, which is basically a little mountain village, to spend my summers with my grandma (rip) and grandpa (rip). They were farmers too. I spent my summers on their field working with them.

We grew corns, beans and some local fruits. There was also a lot of nut trees they grew. These were mostly cash crops eventho they would also survive the winters with what they have grown.

I still tend the garden in my house and go to that mountain village and work in those fields most summers.

So for me, starting to grow cannabis was an easy choice as i could see i had a way with plants since i was a child. I believe the greenthumb thing is real. Now, this doesn’t mean that the ones don’t have it can’t grow. It just means some things come easily for me. The plants i grew seem to enjoy being grown by me, most of them at least :)

I firmly believe in organic farming. I’m not gonna talk shit about chemical farming. That works too. It just that when i think about farming, i thing about fertile lands. Both on the surface and deep down. This is just what i envision. Growing plants is useful for humans but it can also be useful and beneficial to many more life forms.

I grow in peat mix, indoors. Using leds. I’m trying to conserve as much energy as i can at every corner and try to get away with minimum amount of usage. This is mostly because of my environmental concerns tho i believe “the planet is fine, the people are fucked.” RIP George Carlin :) Another aspect of me not going with hydro is again this environmental concerns. Too much water and electricity consumption imho.

I try to make my own nutes using different techniques like composting, fermenting or lately dabbling in bokashi. Since i’m not legal i’m trying to run 0 waste. All the leaves stems and garbage is either being composted or fermented and gets put back into the cycle. Make specialised nutes myself at home like potassium rich fpes or enzyme rich fpes which are used at some specific points to encourage specific responses.

So all in all, i don’t know where to put myself as my mentors in agriculture was always the elderly but i’m currently implementing techniques that they didn’t so not old school, but to my knowledge all these techniques are very old so not new school either :D

I don’t use any recipes for my soils or any other aspects of my grows. I like experimenting alot. That means there are more failures than success but its just how it is. You get used to it and you learn so much from it. :)

New technology with old school Growing techniques. Been growing since 2001. Started my first grow room just after 9-11. We were worried about seeds being x-rayed at the time due to all the anthrax scares. Was a crazy time. Much like today. Seems certain administrations bring out the crazies.

Anyhow I’m all organic and love old school genetics. I like new stuff too but I’m not going to chase rainbows. If something good comes along i give it a go. I was out of the game for a few years due to unfortunate circumstances but I’m back now. Glad to help a new generation of growers.

Great point Echo.
I failed miserably on my summer grow but learned so much more through the failures by seeing what stresses the plant and why. It sucked but I know it will help me moving forward.

New to growing only 6 years in I have a 40 plant medical grow license and learned from the farm and about 3 local growers that were living in Ontario mostly and moved to pei to slow down. I use 1000 watt hourtulx for veg and flower I use promix bs with gh nutes. Was thinking about trying advanced but haven’t got the nerve yet. I grow mostly indices but have a few stativa for some of my Ontario friends

I moved to indoor growing, as I said, after seeing the "light", using a M1000 Metal Halide. My previous attempts outdoors always sucked because of needing to plant in non-optimal areas to keep from being spotted...they actually flew helicopters around to try to find outdoor grows...In Pennsylvania, you are lucky to grow anything outdoors. a $10K operation to yank $50 worth of smoke. Now they just keep the money!
