Wondering the best way to germ/raise seedings for 20-gal outdoor grow

I'll try not to go crazy with the questions but here's one I need advice on. I am going to end up outdoors, in 20-gal fabric pots. I'll pop the beans inside, but they eventually will wind up outside. I have an old metal halide 600W system I'll use for the seedings, either in jiffy pots or solo cups, so I can keep them inside for a while if needed. I have a variety of bags left over from old grows-2.5-gal, 10 gal and the 20 gal.

Looking for your advice on how many times to transplant. Do I go straight from the starter cup to the 20 gal? Do I go from starter cups to 2.5 gal. then 20? I'm going to fill up the 20's and leave them outside-transplanting to them inside isn't an option. I'm too old to lug around that much weight! 😄

I'm curious how you outdoor guys with big containers handle this. Thanks.

personally i try to only transplant once. i go from a 6 inch starter pot inside straight to my 10 gal fabric outside. i also dont really see the need for a 20gal unless i would be doing more than 1 plant per pot

IMHO, If the OP is doing an organic grow, then 20 gallon is his best bet, considering the plants will be pretty good size before they go outside to veg for a few more months.

I am doing Organic. I've done outdoors only 2 seasons, and so far, I haven't had any more yield than when I grew indoors 15 years ago. I wondered if I was constricting my root system with the 10 gal. pot size. I do plan to pop and veg inside for a while. My location has a pretty long summer.

not sure what strain . but id transplant them in the 2.5 gal , unless they are autoflower.. those you would want to transplant just once.. autos tend to be a bit tricky..
No autos this time, though I've gained some respect for them since they seem to have evolved some in their hardiness over the years. I've ordered an assortment-Green Crack, Blue Cindy, Permanent Marker, Sour Diesel, Gelato 45, Runtz X The White, and Larry OG Kush.

We will see how many I can get to the outdoors stage.

And before the comments begin, I DO realize my limited success outdoors is probably related more to my knowledge than 10 gal pots. 🙃

would they not be a way, you could plant them in the ground outdoor. i have seen some nice size plants in the ground without a pot. a good way is to just dig a hole then mix your soil from there.👍

I was thinking about doing just that with a few of those beans. I'd like to compare and see if I can grow some big plants without containers.

If planting in soil, it's helpful to know the surrounding soil. I'd say drainage is especially important.

Coordinating the duration of the indoor "night" with the outdoor night can be important. I don't do much outside growing, but my guess is putting plants out slightly before the summer solstice would be about the right time to do it.

I’ve learned the hard way to wait until the first week of June! In my neck of the woods. But I will move them all out during the day in May, and take them back in and put them back under the light just to save a little electricity! Kind of get some acclimated, but never out before the first week of June permanently! But I know a lot of people try! With varying degrees of success!

I've grown some monsters in my compost piles..
the problem with that is they have access to so much nitrogen, there are tons of leafs to trim ..
bent over all the branches grow into big donkey dicks..

Definitely keep in mind the drainage ability of the surrounding soil and dig nice big holes..

there's a guy named brown dirt warrior. he had videos on YouTube..
gorilla grower from back in the day.. but he shows ya the size plants that are possible in the ground..
and the videos are pretty cool 😎..lol

I learned the hard way I would rather grow 8 one Pound plants than 3 three Pound plants! Allows for a little more variety! And a little better chance to stay out of the ER! Where you are growing has a lot to do with it! I am old! Ease of maintenance is a big deal for me!😁🐒 If a ladder becomes necessary, Count me out!
