So after realizing the Hlg550 is out of my budget for a light for my 4x4 tent I have been on a mission to diy a QB setup for around half the price, around 500 or so. I think I have found the solution.
x4 qb120s $125x2 at amazon $250
Mean well hlg-240h-c2100 $69 at rapidled
Powe cord, dimmer and wagos around$20 at raidled
Wire, aluminum pieces and nuts and screws from local hardware place $50 or so. Wired in series this setup should run around 400 watts and be nearly equal to the coverage and output of the hlg550.
Any comments, criticisms or helpful info welcome from anyone that finds their way to this thread.

Well i dont know enough to say that setup will equal an hlg550 or not but if it did wouldnt everyone be doing it instead of buying 550s?
Im not sure how 4 qb120s will equal 4 qb 288s unless your driving them alot harder,Ill follow along and learn.BTW i got my 550s(2)for 1599.00 shipped to my door, about 800 each.

8 qb120s not 4,I know the wattage won't be equal,by I believe the coverage area and efficiency will be really close, probably not as much penetration but idk for sure until I compare the specs.

Do a Google for TBONESHUFFLE He is on another forum (or PM me so as not to be rude here)and seems to be a proper expert on the QBs..He sure helped me a bunch before I found the Farm:)

I think you already know this but you need 2x drivers you picked or a hlg 480w to run all 8.i don't know the math off the top of my head but I'm thinking at 2100ma you are exceeding the voltage of the molex connectors so probably should use 2 x 240w drivers.

One thing about the 120's is that they are 24v..The newer 132's are 36V, so drivers are easier to locate.
I run the 132's in Parallel using a Meanwell LRS-350-36 (x2) ($40each shipped at Arrow Electronics) for 2 boards at a time (it can run all 4 at full power, but I wanted the flexibility. I am not too worried about thermal runaway with these boards.

Really? On hlg's website they recommend that driver for 8 boards wires in series. I didn't see anything about using 2,I'll be sure to check though.

24v times 8 boards is 192 forward volts, that driver should work,it's around 50w per board and yeah the no heat sink part is cool but still have to build a frame for the boards but no biggie.

Yes I smoke what I grow so sometimes I don't have all the answers and in the wrong order as well lol.that sounds perfect at 192v your well under the 300v rating of the connector.so 1 x hlg-480h-c2100b would be the driver I used.can dim it with a 100k pot or even get the wifi control place sells and dim/on/off/timer from your phone :)

Hey no problem man,i have many moments of my own. Tomorrow I'm gunna compare the lumens per watt and try to figure out the best spacing for my 4x4 so I can figure out the frame.

After comparing the charts on the hlg website,my board will put out roughly 173 lumen/watt and 2.56 umoles/joules at board using roughly 392watts and the hlg550 is 170 lumen/watt and 2.53 umoles/joules at board using 510 watts, pretty close but id say mine should be a hair bit more efficient and doesn't require heatsinks as well as a bit cheaper to build. You all are welcome to steal my idea too lol
