try it without the cloth but with soil as wick. it works great.

thats the main key. Soil as wick works too, my Sub Irrigated Planter works like this.

wick must not be any organic material. i used cotton last year and that wasn a good descision. the orange towel stripes rotted away and i switched to another cotton towel because 2 sripües werent enough to keep up with her thirst. this time its microfiber. last years 0,2l battle:
