for easy googling, try hydrokorrel or hydrocorn. Gold Label seems to be most readily available, although others are selling it too.

It just seems strange that they would be going out of business, since their product works so well. Usually, it's companies who have bad products that go out of business. When I used Hydroton, I was really impressed with how well it worked as a medium.

Now that we've established that LECA isn't a scarce resource....anyone know the REAL reason why Hydroton LECA will no longer be available?

I'm sure Hydroton is keeping company issues very quiet, but I think its got something to do with another company in Germany. Other then that I have no details.

If you are a fan of Hydroton then you should pick up some Gold Label Hydrokorrels. Its a much better product than the Hydroton. It is much more porous than the Hydoton and a lot less dusty out of the bag.

Just did a little research, from what I've read there is no shortage of clay or clay mines being depleted. The issue is with Hydroton (the brand name) and the manufacturers in Germany where the clay comes from. So don't believe what some random guy tells you, its all about money. If there was a real shortage of high quality clay it would be all over the news, and its not. That's because the issues between the 2 companies (Hydroton and Germany manufacturers) have nothing to do with running out of resources, but politics and even more about money.

If there was a lack of clay resources, then all the other brands of LECA would also be taken off the shelves, but there not, so its obvious that Hydroton is having inner company issues that not many people know about and there will always be another company that replaces them if they do stop selling LECA.

My conclusion, don't worry, even if the hydro shops stop selling Hydroton I promise you there will be another name brand of LECA thats just as good.

If Hydroton goes under, there will be under brands producing the exact same product.

There are all kinds of new companies that are taking the place of Hydroton. Root Royale and a new brand called Grow It are readily available LECA products.

I've been using the Gold Label Hydro Korrels (Corn) and it works like Hydroton. A bit more expensive, but does the trick.

The Growstones works also, but I believe it's basically a form of perlite (volcanic glass vs recycled glass). It tends to float when using E&F, crushes easily, and the bottom of the bag is dust which turns into a sludge if you rinse the medium before using it.

the clay they were mining wasn't up to spec so they shut the mine down and stopped making the product as they had nowhere else to source that type of clay... wait till all the guano companies start shutting down and all the phosphates start disappearing lol... finite resources are finite for a reason

Ok, just to correct myself, it is PlantIt, not Grow It.

i was told going out of business and was also told from another store that the salts content was getting too high cause they have to dig very deep to get the clay . i take everything with a garin of salts but yes someone will take over the hydroton business in my opion. its didt stop me from buying 20x50L bags for fall/winter season :)

The people at HydroGalaxy told me it was taken off the market because a substantial percentage of growers had crops die using hydroton. It was related to the processing of the clay, and the resulting cover of a dust which if not washed off thoroughly could kill a crop when circulated through the water.
That being typed, I've used Hydroton 5-6x and never had a problem, just rinse until the water runs clear... And there are good (better) substitutes.
