When I bought my 1st light a year ago I got a 600w "switchable" ballast
It came with two bulbs 1 MH and 1HPS
The MH has been running 16/8 practically one year straight (Vegging)
and I have never used the HPS bulb.....

Is that HPS bulb Only for flowering?
or can I veg with it?

Is My MH bulb getting weak?

Thanks brother Farmers!

hey ken.. i read in a thread here on the farm where someone said hps in veg brings out males. 2 grows ago i had more plants than my floros could handle so i had to kick on the 1000 hps in the last 2 weeks of veg. and man them were some big ass girls,30 of them. i seen good results at the end of veg. no hermies out of the deal

you can totally use the hps bulb during veg. the only downfall is that your plant will stretch a little more between each node, and the blue light in the metal halide helps to thicken up the stem.

Thanks Jim! :)

Im Not Buying it either ...I don't know much......

But ,
I don't think the light could make a plant turn from female to male. But I don't know much

Hope others chime in with their real world experience

Excellent Cannabeans Thanks!

Do ya thinks my MH might be getting weak after a year?

Usually commercial growers will get new bulbs after a year. Hps bulbs are said to have a longer life. If i were you i wouldnt worry about a new MH bulb for another 6 months.

Thanks Jim! :)

Well good point Ken but then I think what the fuck is the Story with Chastity/Chaz Bono , Surely it must have been a light issue er the lack of I'ma thinkin that changed It's Sex . So if by chance theirs any correlation between cannabis & them Bono's then keep an open eye on the light spectrum . Good Luck ,,, :hi:

When i first set everything up a few years ago i was so hyped up 2 get the ball rolling i cracked the beans under flourescents and blasted them under the hps! The plants grew great my sativas wanted 2 bust through the ceiling. I took some cuttings and slowed things down n started veggin under t5s.So if i had 2 do it again I would. good luck n happy gardening

Depends on what the HPS bulb is we used to veg under 430 watt Son Agro with enhanced blue spectrum and it worked great. I have run MH bulbs for over a year due to lack of funds to replace them with no ill effects to the grow that I could tell but that was just in veg. Good Luck

I should add we always grow from clone so I can't say if HPS would affect the male to female ratio from seed. Good Luck

I've havent used a MH to veg with in years. I acquired several HPS lamps a while back so I just use them. No issues at all. fast lush growth from clone. Im doing some DTC99 seeds now but havent sexed them yet.

I've done alot of both in all stages. (for various different reasons).

The kind of bulb has NEVER stressed or turned a female into a hermaphrodite. :sun

The MH is better in veg because this keeps the nodes smaller and tighter. Which may not seem important to you now, but when it comes time to manage your canopy and try and get even light to all the bud sites it will matter. HPS lights always make the plants stretch more in veg.:fighting0003:

When producing flowers, the MH doesn't make as dense of nugs or as many trichs. So over yield and potency is not as great. :help:

And if it helps, this is how I've come to do things:
T12 florescent- for seedlings and cloning
T5 florescent - for veg
MH - for first two and a half weeks or so of flowering during stretch
HPS - from 2.5 weeks of flower until harvest

and I also leave the girls in 36-48 hours of complete darkness before chop. Some say it pushes out a few more trichomes. I can't say FOR SURE if this is true, but I CAN say that it certainly doesn't hurt anything and saves a little electricity so I do it anyway. :bong2:

Thanks Everyone.......:animbong:

Well this morn. I switched the bulb ...and I like it!....I think the Plants like it too

Seems more like the sun... all orangey and stuff.
It's a nice change from the bright white.....maybe the plants will think so too.
and I stilll have a 150w MH on em too.

the veg room has thinned out a bit...but there will be more moving in soon

I have read studies that said that when growing from SEED if your using more red and orange spectrum you are more likely to sprout more males. I have never heard of a female plant turning male because of a particular color spectrum. Also HPS lights uses the weakest color out of the light spectrum. You get the best results using mixed spectrum(HPS & MH).

Lookin Good Ken with the new color spectrum ,

The little ladies should love it . Good Luck ,,,

Im thinking of hanging a couple 85w 6500k CFL's in there to add some spectrum
