use motor oil. There's no reason to use vac pump oil.

Get an inline filter and change the oil often and the vac pump will last forever.

Is this true? I've never hear that? What's the diff between the two?

What makes vac oil..."vac oil"?

There is a difference in the viscosity, but performance-wise, there is no difference. Motor oil serves its purpose in the vac pump, which is lubricate the internals.

Try it out. I'm not here to spread disinformation or trying to promote/sell a product. I have been using vac pumps since the 90s and motor oil has always worked for me.

Id be a little worried about gunking up the insides of my vac pump using motor oil... I did a google search and found quite a few references to NOT using motor oil...

Also i live in a cold state in winer so trying to use motor oil in the winter = the pump wont run.. oil is too thick...

Viscosity has everything to do with performance..

Quote i stole off some other non important forum..

" Vacuum pump oil is low vapor pressure high purity
mineral oil with a narrow high boiling range something entirely different from motor oil.

Motor oil would quickly gum up a rotary vane pump and
the high viscosity would likely damage the rotor seals.
Motor oils are complex blends of various petroleum cuts
with a high percentage of additives.

Power steering fluid (clear) works in a pinch but the ultimate vacuum is dependent on the oil vapor pressure which is very low in true vacuum oil. Some types of clear low viscosity hydraulic oils can also be used but will not pull the rated pump vacuum again due to the high vapor pressure.

Unless you want to ruin your pump stick to vacuum pump oil which is found at reasonable cost at refrigeration wholesalers. The "lab grades" are not necessarily needed
and are much more costly. "

Got the same blue shit as you Dabbie, what was cool was telling the kid exactly what I was using the vacuum pump for when he couldn't envision lubricating oil for a vacuum pump, or what a vacuum pump would be used for.
His eyes just about bugged out of his head when I said 'vacuum purging hash' with a straight face.
(I also explained (whether he knew it or not) they sell grow equipment now.

(I was wearing my Pillsbury Dough Boy 'Wake & Bake' shirt as I was searching my Casa De Pot for the Vac pump oil, so that coupled with my puppy got lots of 8am stares, smiles & thumbs up.
(And helper dude told me to 'go make the hash!' on my way out the door.)
Colorado is kinda awesome, and I've been around this country many times over.

I grab quarts from orielly auto They cost about the same as a qt of oil. They will most likely have to get it from their warehouse but that only took them a day. N it's not blue.

The half quart of oil that came with my pump isn't blue either...
Husky Air Compressor Oil (For all oil lubricated air compressors)
16 oz white bottle, orange-ish, brown label
The blue shit I bought today is:
CAT Pumps
ISO 68
Premium grade high pressure pump oil
Was like $10 for 21 oz's.
Didn't realize how often the oil needs to be changed, had some pretty yucky looking solids in there that I emptied this morning.

Thank you, ohthatguy8, but I'm with Dabbie, BPO, lol!

Then i got vac oil that was brown great for cold starts.. now i got blue also great for cold starts. :D

If anything i kinda like the blue better just cause its blue! fuck why not :P

Makes for some interesting colored hash if we let the oil purge into the hash.
(Just like when I move blasting indoors, next to my furnace on cold days to keep myself nice and warm, and not worry about that pesky pilot light, lol)(*)

(* That was total sarcasm, in case anyone needed that pointed out.)
(I'm high, sorry, I thought that was a prerequisite for surfing this site.)

Dabbie motor oil amoungst other things in it has detergants in the oil. Oil in a car engine is lube, cleaner, and removes heat like anti freeze in a way. I could go way over board into oil applications but vac oil does not have detergants, is also formulated to specific demands. You could counter and say well hydraulic oil does not have detergants in it wich is true. The issue is that vacuum pump oil is designed to not take the loads that would be found in a car or in hydraulic or the heat. Vac pump oil has less addictives in it, those additives can spell doom for vac pump vanes because they can degrade the material the vanes are made from, and or cause the vanes to stick in the housing.

If you use a oil other than vac pump oil what will happen is the vanes in the pump will QUICKLY get stuck and the effciancy will go down the hill. This is not meant to be a "attack" on anyone, but spend the money and get the correct oil for what ever it is. If you have a cheap vac pump it will proboly shit out before the oil gets black:eek:. Most people spend coin for a good 5 or 8CFM vac pump and will go as far to say they are not one that will run a differant oil in them. Keep an eye on your oil in the vac pump and change it as recommended. Sorry for the rant of sorts, 2 peaves I have and 1 is when people try to be cheap asses when reality is there maybe a dollar worth of goods used and it can ruin a pricey item.
