I'm astonished at how quickly things have gotten to this point, and proud of you (if you'll allow that) and just fuckin' impressed as HELL.<snipped>
We are at the point in our second harvest of deciding where we want our pot to be sold. Unfortunately packaging takes as long as grooming does so we try to sell smaller batches at a time so that we can manage the packaging without needing every single one of us to do it because all the plant care, traceability, cleaning, potting, cloning, etc. still needs to go on while we are packaging. For us smaller batches means 2-5 lbs at a time. That does not seem like that much when you have hundreds of lbs but if you have to package nearly all that weight into 1 gram baggies or hand roll 600 joints or pack 1000 cones it takes a huge amount of time. The real benefit for shops buying from us though is that in that sale of a few lbs we can include as many as 20 strains at a time so the shop does not have to put out huge payments at once and still is able to have a big selection of strains for their customers to choose from. I thought it would be a good marketing strategy but I really had no idea that it would make us so popular for retail shops and we literally could place our products in any retail recreational shop in the state right now. (except for Mainstreet Marijuana in Vancouver because I despise the guy who owns it and have been very vocal about that publicly:))) This tool has said to reporters that he will never allow a grower to make more money from the weed they grow when he sells it in his shop than he does, meaning the grower who has the plant for 5 months will make less than he does when he has the dried product for a couple of days. I cannot stand the guy!!!) That puts me in the spot of having to decide who "gets" to carry our product.....go freaking figure! I feel it is best to have W.O.W. Weed in some shops all the time and a few of the larger shops all of the time because we can keep a few smaller shops stocked pretty much all the time if our indoor harvests go OK and still have the novelty of our many strains in some of the larger shops at holidays maybe or featured once a month or something...? When I call or email someone because we think it would be a good spot to deal with we get responses like "this is the call we have been waiting for" or "you made our month by calling" or "we never thought you would call us" and it is so wild to me that our little operation is that popular with the retail people! Now we have to get our name out to the customers and we are going to at least try to get our product out there for less than $20 a gram (which I know sounds nasty ass high but with taxation and regulation at its current levels much lower is not possible) but hopefully if we put out a really good product that will be relatively easy. Our packaging is so simple and it is not smell proof so you can smell us coming a mile away and most shop owners love that and say...our shop finally smells like a pot shop should. What was once a liability (smelling strongly of weed) is now a selling point....I love it!
You've just hit on the ideas and practices, as well as the reality behind the notion of doing something you love. Sometimes, when you make doing something you love your job, it becomes a job, a chore, and actually takes you away from the aspects you loved. I experienced it with fishkeeping when I went from hobbyist to working the trade. But! You still love growing weed, you're just not able to do it *as* part of your job anymore. There is so much more to this business than just growing good weed.....:-/ Probably one of the reasons I had no interest in owning any sort of a business to begin with or really at any point in my life prior to this. I don't like paperwork, I don't like answering phone calls all day long or emails every 3 minutes but so far with our business it falls to me to manage pretty much everything except the plants now which for the most part Sophy, my oldest daughter and her fiance David care for daily. I started doing this because I believe in legal weed and I like to grow weed. When WA legalized I thought having a legitimate growing operation would be a way to affect both of those things. Seems with all this other stuff I do less and less of the actual growing. I finally went and got my WA medical card so I could grow a few plants of my own at home......now isn't that ironic:) For anyone considering "legal" growing....wrap your head around all the business aspects of this crazy process because that is what takes the most time, concentration and attention when it comes right down to it if you want to be successful is probably the most critical part of that whole thing. Of course a good product is crucial as well but I am not naive enough to think we are the best growers out there....we are small potatoes in the scheme of growing techniques and skills. We try to keep good relationships with other growers/processors/retailers and I still try to help every single person I can make it through this crazy process and that has been pretty much priceless in our standing in this business community. I am still just blown away by this whole journey and when I take a moment to sit back and reflect on it all it sort of makes my head spin!
And to think I am just some old fat bald broad that loves weed enough to go through all this silliness:-))) Ain't life grand!I'm astonished at how quickly things have gotten to this point, and proud of you (if you'll allow that) and just fuckin' impressed as HELL.

Looking back, especially rereading some of your first posts, I'm blown away, too. This just drips awesome all over the place. :D

He has no idea what he has done to himself with all of his comments! I will personally never set foot in his store either as a buyer or seller even if it means driving hundreds of miles.

lol..Yep :)This just drips awesome all over the place. :D
I don't think I am any kind of an expert but thanks for the kind words:) Really I am just a sort of crazy driven sort of person who really believes in legalization and there has been so much involvement and work by so many other people that has gotten us here. We are just terribly fortunate and we know that more than anyone else. All along the main reason I had to do this was to be a part of paving that way....really it was just such a big deal to me as it is to most of the people on this message board I would imagine, to see weed legal. Not that it really is true legalization, but it sure as hell is a start and hopefully each state that does come on board will do better and better until we really have something eventually! It so could have turned to disaster for us.....really it could have.....and I just thank all the weed gods.....all the wonderfully giving people that have helped us.....my amazing kids who stuck it out working 7 day work weeks 10 plus hour days and put up with me and all my talking talking talking about nothing but weed and how we could manage to do this......and everything else that has cosmically aligned or whatever happened in each and every step that went right to get us here:) I know I say it all the time but man o man it is just freaking incredible!
