Hey fam is buying an elite clone worth it? How does one go about picking an elite cut they haven’t smoked on? If I’m gonna spend hundreds of dollars how do you go about making that choice?

Are these elite cuts phenohunted from big populations? Are the terps and thc content that much different than if you bought a pack of the same strain?

from my perspective, holding an elite cut has more to do with clout than it does anything else. to have an original cut of ATF, MTF, Arcata Trainwreck, OG Kush, ECSD, NYCD, etc, it's a "i have this and it's rare" type thing. some of them are super finicky and require a dialed environment to express themselves properly.

however, some of them did come from massive phenohunts, others came from lucky shots from bagseed.

as for the price, i'll never pay what people ask for them. half the people selling cuts treat them as if they're growing money on trees. I'm sorry, $150+ a cut is bullshit, especially for the buyer. they literally have a mother plant those cuts are coming off of, they'll be able to take more cuts in two weeks. asking that price is simply capitalizing on a known brand THEY didn't create. think of it like scalping. I keep mother plants, and give out clones to whoever needs/wants em. are they "elite" genetics? no, they don't carry that branding. they'll still knock your dick in the dirt though.

at most I'd pay $20 for a cut I really want. all the pricing is, is gatekeeping and it's counterintuitive to the what the culture used to be. emery and many of us others used to dream of starting up a ton of seedlings and planting them all over in public places, or producing enough seeds that everyone could grow and hit the prohibitionists with a green wave. none of it ever came to fruition, but it used to be about sharing the love and good genetics and now it's all a money grab.

stepping off my soapbox.

I agree, its just a fucking plant. Buy some good seeds, cross to make a thousand more, and have fun looking for the winner. No plant is worth $500.

The last time I saw cuts going for that was when the Purple Kush first hit the BC market back in the early 00's. It was hands down the most in demand strain at the time and I think largely responsible for BC's early reputation for weed back then. Only the bikers had it at first and then it slowly trickled out, but people were paying a lot of money for the rights to grow it at first. Eventually it got out and everyone had it. But it for a while there, you had to buy in.

Why buy an elite clone? Thousands of clones out there for $20-30 that makes top shelf smoke. Millions of seeds out there that will make better than the elite cut. So potentcy is probably not the reason to buy an elite clone. Taste? Lots of great taste for $20. Unless it is immune to all mold and disease and makes half a pound in 4 weeks, what makes it worth $500? Is it the name? lol sucker born every day.

In the early 00's you could lay out 100 different top shelf strains on the table and the only one you could smell in the room was Purple Kush. It was head and shoulder better than absolutely anything available in British Columbia at the time, and that's saying a lot. People would pay 30-40% more for that specific cut of that strain. If you had a typical bigger grow of 80-100 lights, you were happy to pay someone handsomely for that cut. Because it was hard to get for the first few years. But that $500 investment could translate to an extra 20K every couple months.

Now for a homegrower... not sure it's worth it. Most people with elite cuts are happy to just give me a cut knowing it's for personal. I don't think you should be dinged that hard for your own medicine.

Fast forward. 2021 millions of great genetics out there, its easier to find something better.

Admittedly I'm stuck in the past lol. But I'm trying LED now so there is that.

But to tell you the truth, if someone tomorrow offered me a cut of the original SOL Shishkaberry I'd pay them a thousand bucks for it. Again.. stuck in the past hahaha.

I’m loving the discussion guys this is exactly what I was looking for. I am a home grower but I’m getting into the scene a bit more than originally intended and will be off loading my 5x5 to a close friend who’s been in it for a long time. So now I’m at the point where I’m trying to get some strains that I know work and keeping them around. I have a lemon OG cut that’s straight up lemon fuel I love it! I just don’t wanna waste my time on popping seeds to end up with something that isn’t going to sell. I’ve seen a lot of variability in seed and some just don’t come out with that bag appeal or smoke like others even if it was a perfect run. I appreciate everyone’s input thanks fam!

With seeds you at least have a chance of getting something better than the "elite clone"- and it will be something no one else has.

Plant lots of seeds. Clone everything and flip asap to determine which one if any are keepers. That's way you don't waste months growing tons of sub par bud. Once you find the winner, throw the rest away and start another strain. Rinse and repeat. After while you have several strains that are all "elite". Then find a sucker willing to give you $1000 for it.

Considering what you have to pay for seeds of the latest, most sought after fashion show strains. Only to put in a ton of work and find you have nothing more than a so-so phenotype to show for it. Paying for a authentic, legit disease free cut is a great value. The problem is it's a HUGE leap of faith that you will actually end up with such.

Why buy the latest most sought after fad? Lots of decades old strains that have the potential to produce the winner. I'd be looking at early to mid 90s strains.

Those are great and all but if you want to make a couple bucks they dont cut it. These days it's a fashion show. Just like having the latest pair of Jordans. All I hear about is Cookies- Gary Payton, Georgia Pie etc. Just the way it is. A lot of these goofs have such a tolerance that flower of any quality doesnt do much but puffin on a blunt is way more "pimp" than a dab rig.

Spend $1000 on the latest fad and by time you grow it nobody wants it anymore because its old news and it was never that great to begin with lol. It's all marketing bs.

Well I assume when buying something like that they will tell me it’s growth characteristics and what it’s ideal environment is. The variability in seed is why I can see paying someone who put in the work to hunt to get that unicorn pheno. I’ll be doing small 5 pack hunts but nothing like some of these other guys are able to do.

Where do you live? Are there any regular clone stores in your area?

It sucks because strains hang around here at the dispensaries dissappear for the new strains in the next round. The menu is never the same. If I find a good strain can never get it again.
Around here it stays too long. They start at 15 and next year its $6g and not worth smoking.
