They make horticultural specific light meters. <PPF and PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) are the most relevant measurements of light for plants. They can assess the intensity of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), which is the range of light that plants use.>
Yes, I have one. A Quantum Par meter. It cost me an arm and a leg.

I thought they were talking about those lux meters that you can buy for like $75.

Interesting on the low lux and solid buds but as mentioned solid buds don't denote quality .
I am sure many who run lights higher wonder how things really could have been.
While genetics may be the true answer for solid buds, there is little doubt the plant loves light ...
No meter here . I turn it up and watch. Rinse, lather, repeat.

Once a solid 20 years ago I did some some really frosty loose buds of Northern lights. And it was really good. Mayne not by today's standards. But I was surprised to see loose buds be good smoke.

Overall plant growth is similar to working out at the gym - there are a lot of factors and it's not just "work out X days a week". You gotta eat the right foods, eat the proper amounts, get enough rest and recovery, provide enough stimulation to elicit muscle growth etc etc. Oh and yes genetics also play a part in how big or shredded we are as humans. I think a lot of growers(myself included) think that throwing more light at a plant is going to produce better buds. But I think we forget to take into account the necessary increase or balance we have to bring out of all the other factors when we blast our plants with insane amounts of PPFD/DLI. Most people won't see a noticeable enough difference in yield or quality above 750 umol when compared to the multitude of problems that can arise from 900-1200 PPFD.

Bud density is a genetic trait. You can feed your Poodle a pefectly balanced diet and exercise and it will never be a Labrador. I don't care how much light and food you give them, my Colombian will never make tight buds. In my grow, more light makes bigger buds. It doesn't make them any denser.

Thanks again for everyone's reply I will try some of these ideas and see what happens. like I said the buds are not really loose, but I would like to tighten them up some .

I was under the impression that lux only measured the light visible to humans so was pointless in measuring the photons available for a plant.
If you know the overall spectrum of the light you can convert lux to ppfd. Lix predominantly measure green light so based on the amount of green in a the spectrum for a given light source a relatively accurate conversation can be made to ppfd based of lux measurements

genetics - thy biggest factor.
light spectrum
temperature

some of the variables that affect bud shape & size.
Been saying this about organics for years. Its an industry and we all onow how dirty the fert industry is. The typical unicorn piss in a bottle. Plants cannot take up organic ferts but with that saiid there are some benefits to the microbes attracted and symbiotic relationships that occur in the process of breaking organics down into ionic form

Ok smokers I have a question that is going to have a hundred different replies more than likely. How to hell do you get tighter buds? I will usually grow around 10 to 12 plants under two 1000watt HPS lights. I am trying for the first time Candy Bud going on what some people at a dispensary have told me. I am growing purple haze and I have fox farm soil that was just transplanted when I switched them to bigger pots 3 gallon. I let them adjust to the transplant for two weeks and have switched them to flower. The taste is good of everything that I have grown but this one thing seems to elude me.
dont forget about the dry & cure.

2000watts can do wonders if the set up is configured correctly.
Whats the pot size for all 10 - 12 plants and how long are you vegging for.

I have switched them to flower about two weeks ago they are in 3 gallon pots now. I put them in the bigger pots two weeks before switching them to let them adjust to the pot change. The plants at that time were about two ft tall. This is a picture of them just before I switched them to flower and a picture of the pots they are in now.

They seem health and to be liking the transition to the new pots

This picture was taken just a few minutes ago. They are just starting to flower sothey have a ways to go. I am trying Candy bud or what ever it is called for the first time to see any difference.
I heard good things about candy bud myself

So two pages of replies……

But surprisingly nobody has mentioned:

-Temperature control (day/night) as you approach harvest

-Proper plant shaping to best utilize the light sphere

-Deleting or adding specific light spectrum(s) late in flower

-Reducing feed strength and/or inputs in relation to the plant’s development

-Reducing watering frequency in the last stage of the plant’s life

If your buds are not tight, you need to dial in your parameters. Very rarely will an indica dominant strain give you larfy colas if grown even somewhat correctly. Respond to the plant’s needs, not your own impulses or your hydro shops advice. The above suggestions are easy changes to make, and it’s not your genetics holding you back in that space.

Well, my grow tent was full of the flowering purple haze, so I put two of the California dream outside. This is the first time I have ever tried growing a plant outdoors. Here is a picture of them. I might transfer them into much bigger pots and let them see what they will do. Plus give them a trim.
