48 hours darkness before harvest = mold (for me)

Hi. Just wanted to share my experience so other growers can learn from my mistakes. I was researching about the 48h of darkness before harvest - supposedly it gets the trichomes bigger and the buds more swollen. I read a lot of forums and ppl were arguing whether it has any effect or not . I didn't read anywhere it could have a negative effect so I decided to try it. The result - I got mold on my bigggest and thickest buds. The reason is Im using CFLs which keep low temperature and I dont use any ventilation - the grow was just fine and its the second successfull grow i do this way - CFLs and no ventilation. Probably many of you will say its a mistake but its working out fine for me so.. Anyway - This created perfect conditions for mold - darkness and humidty. Also the buds don't get more potent in any way - for 48 hours no significant amount of THC can be sintetized . They just got a little bigger cuz the plant pumped water in them - yes nothing else but water. In case you're in the same situtation - break the buds with mold down to smaller pieces and put them in direct sun light for 3-4 hours, turning them around . Sun light kills all the mold spores. Then after a real good dry they should be good to smoke (again prolly many ppl will argue but thats the way I chose to do it)

TL;DR - don't give your plant 48 hours of darkness before harvest- you risk to get mold and the benefits of that dark period are questionable.

I personaly don't believe in the 48hrs darkness method,but if I did I wouldn't water them,thats askin for mould,if you want better Trich production,drop your humidity a bit,otherwise I'd get an hid,its the best way to get denser,triched out and most important more potent!iv tryed cfl and fluros they just aren't the same,even add a 125 watt or a 250watt hps,youll see and smell the difference,good luck whatever you do,76

Can you have to much dehumidifier? Mine is a bit strong for previous use on flash drying shit. Thanks for any advice. Mine are sitting in 3 foot RW slabs and I was about to try the 48hour

I completely understand what you are saying. I love these old threads for the info they contain. Still up in the air on bud washing, due to slight potency reduction proven, but I'm scared this PM will spread during curing. Thank you for your response though, no bs

I tried the 48hr method years ago
When I went to pull them out they were a lot more frosty & I thought yeah onto something here then I realised the trichomes on the bud had split open so yeah the leaves were more frosty at the cost of the bud if you kwim.

No scientist or anything. I've tried it once in the past.

Only thing I could tell was my exhaust fan was working OT to keep the humidity down.

Scoped them after and I couldn't tell a difference from the 2 days earlier.

Not worth IMO.

I did it because of a hurricane last year, I'd pulled it to trim and let it sit on a bench in my work shop out of the flower room. Then the power went out and it sat in my workshop for 2 more days...3 days in all it was in the shade as I'd restored power to my grow lights.

I swear it was stickier and darker in color than when I pulled her. I've harvested a dozen or so plants since then and I'm letting them sit on my bench for at least 2 days while I trim and take pictures....

What ever it does science or not I seem to like it.......and it sure as heck isn't hurting it at all........I wish I could share my smoke with you all to evaluate it for yourselfs. I've a bunch of strains dried and ready, come on down

All that would do is ripen the plant more. Just harvest as normal if there was a different way that added more we would all be doing it
