When Does the Flowering Stage Actually Begin in Cannabis?

The start of the flowering stage can be a bit subjective, depending on how you define it. There are two common ways growers mark the beginning of flowering:

1. Transition Period (Pre-Flowering) – Week 1 of 12/12 (Not Official Flowering Yet)​

• When you switch to 12/12 lighting (for photoperiod plants), the plant does not immediately start flowering. Instead, it undergoes a transition phase, often lasting 7-14 days, where it stretches significantly and prepares to bloom.
• Some growers call this period "Week 1 of Flowering", but the plant is not yet forming real buds—just showing early signs.

2. The True Start of Flowering (Bud-Set) – Usually After 10-14 Days of 12/12​

• Many experienced growers consider flowering to officially begin when bud sites form, usually around Day 10-14 after the 12/12 flip.
• This is when:
  • White pistils (hairs) appear in clusters at the nodes.
  • The plant stops stretching as much.
  • The first signs of trichome development begin.

This means that if a strain has an 8-week flowering time, you should start counting from the first sign of actual flower formation, not from the first day of 12/12.

For Autoflowers​

• Autos begin flowering on their own, usually between weeks 3-5 from germination.
• The start of flowering is marked not by time but by visible pistils forming at the nodes.

I did 1.5 it was a fun and hard after the trip i felt like a did a double shift.

My tooth exploded my girlfriend playfully slapped me in the chin and poof my tooth obliterated and the tooth ache that came with it wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy I got an emergency dentist she jabbs me up with the needle and starts pulling I felt everything and more I slid down the chair and nearly hit her next level pain the funniest thing was le walking down the road after it trying to smoke my joint looking like I've had a stroke I had to use my other hand to close my lips so I could take a hit haha

You cant suck after pulling a tooth you will make the hole weird.

I had to leave the groupe and go outside on the porch.it was dark silent you could hear some cars on the high way and the night sky was pink.i had a dead tree infront of me and it was moving beautifully.after some time one of the guys comes brings a joint and we just smoke it in silence it was really relaxing.then the only guy that didnt take them came and brings the chaos with him haha.

I burned her a tad about week 4 pushed a lil hard lol thought she could handle it as big as she was I believe if I hadn't had to many castings she would have been fine she takes up my whole 36x36 corner to corner gonna be torture trimming

Yeah 1.5 is where it’s at just the right amount to get you buzzing but not overwhelming
Had quite a few boxes of truffles I preferred them even when mushroom's were legal.

The high Hawaiians were my favourite the colours on them are real funky.

There’s always someone to chat to in dam & have a spliff with guess it’s a good memory sounds like it can imagine the lights the dark & getting stoned with a stranger being a cool time

Done it there nothing in 24 hrs dark from my own experience however try it on a plant get the experience yourself see what you think

Might as well show a macro of pb3 too. She's got probably 3-4 weeks to go still.

@capone304 I've done side by sides with clones and stuff plenty. If you have a way to give three days dark no airflow do it. Volatile terp production and stability is better in dark with no excessive airflow. That's a fact rooted in physics and the chemistry of the plants both lol.

I've never noticed much benefit beyond a couple days, and with some it doesn't make much difference. Makes a good difference with fruity and sweet plants tho

I definitely recommend doing a same same clone run with a control to see for yourself. An easy to pull off basic experiment/example is harvest some branches right before light on, harvest some branches right before lights off. Treat exactly the same but keep separated. Jar separated. You'll end up pleasantly surprised by the time your trimming almost guaranteed lol. If youre trimming smaller plants wet you've probably already made a mistake smell and flavor wise though, and likely won't notice a lick of difference between lights on or off by jarring time or full cure either one.

That all being said i rarely give a dark period because I put more plants in the tent. I just try to take most my stuff late into the night/right before lights on, and trim dry. Sometimes I'll pull em out the tent into ambient light with little airflow for a day or two. Works with some doesn't with others.

I had a plant I called Moonsocket that stunk like twice as strong in the jar if you let her wilt off into drought stress before harvest. discovered that one by accident, but it never worked on any others I've tried it on since. Was reliable with Moonsocket tho. Became my Moonsocket harvest tradition. Moonsocket was actually the mother of pb3 up there at the top of this post and the plant in my avatar

I wouldn't go no ventilation but I would def make sure direct airflow on the plants is minimized. I've always just turned the exhaust fan down and cut off light and circulation fans.
