As the title says, I’m going to do my best to document a grow of Sudanese, if any of the 12 regular seeds germinate.

This is my first grow journal ever, so please excuse any oversight or mistakes and feel free to point them out. Also, please feel welcome to follow and add your own experiences growing landrace strains from anywhere around the world, indoor or out.

I won’t be updating every day as there will be very little change from one day to the next, but I will update over some regular interval, maybe once a week.

I have many years of experience with indoor and out, photos and autos, feminized and regular. That said, this is my first time attempting a landrace, so hopefully all my experience will help me through what may be a difficult grow. The parts I have trouble with, I’m hoping to find support from some other experienced growers.🙏

The plants don’t have a super long flowering time but they are classified as semiauto by some. This is a misnomer, as the plants are photo periods with no Ruderallis genes whatsoever but they can flip to flower with less than 18 hours of light, approximately.
Hopefully they don’t grow too tall, although I’m in an open room and not in a tent I still have 7 foot ceilings to contend with.

I am following germination techniques as directed by Angus over at The Real Seed Company. The seeds were soaked for a few hours in hydrogen peroxide and then dropped into my seedling soil mix, hopefully it’s not too hot for them. As the soil dries out I will be watering, but I’m hoping to see some sprouts before I need to water again.🤞

As far as pots , I plan to upsize anything that grows in the solo cups into 5 gallon bags. Apparently there’s a danger of triggering flowering due to being root bound, so I will need to keep an eye on the solo cups.

As far as soil, I’m starting with a mix of pro mix HP, earthworm castings, Gaia Green all purpose 4-4-4, Gaia Green glacial rock dust, and some additional perlite to fluff up the mixture.
When going into flower, I will be using a similar mix but I will add Gaia Green power bloom 2-8-4.

These are all organic dry amendment ingredients, I will only be adding tap water if all goes well. I may have to top dress, but that remains to be seen. I will not be dechlorinating the water or pH anything.

As far as lighting, I will start with fluorescent tubes, t10 or 12, I forget which but they are “daylight” bulbs rated in the range of 6500 K.
Flowering may be under LED or HPS, depending which has space available at the time.

As far as pics, I don’t have much to offer yet except the seeds soaking and then the solo cups with seeds in them and ready to go.😎

Small, really tiny update, the lights are T8 daylights in a double bulb shoplight fixture, good light for two trays.

I also think I forgot to mention that I’m using a seedling heat pad under the tray, keeping the soil temperature as close to optimal as possible. From cup to cup the temperature range is roughly 22 to 25°C (71.6-77°F). The ideal soil temperature was given as 25°C (77°F) to germinate land race seeds from Northern Africa. So far so good.🙂

Last night I saw the first bit of green breaking through the soil! I was so tempted to post a picture but it’s not even a full set of leaves, just excited I guess, lol!

When I made it into the room this afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised to find 9 out of 12 had broken the surface!
They are all so tiny (seeds were tiny too), they barely show up in the pictures but here’s some of them. Six in these cups have popped up but you might need to zoom in🤣 😎

I forgot to mention that I was able to get the fluorescent light closer by moving things around in the room. That also brought the temperature of the soil up but maybe one or two more degrees at the surface.
Also, I don’t normally use so much perlite but I was told this strain likes looser than average soil. Not sure if that’s true or if it just increases the odds of the roots spreading out successfully. I usually keep my soil almost as light/fluffy as promix HP, this is a little lighter than that.

Congratulations daddy! Those were some good seeds! I like a lot of perlite! It encourages timely dry backs! 👍

I knew posting that picture of the first one breaking ground would jinx it,🤣.
I thought it would be OK if I posted it a day later but apparently the curse is too strong! That plant seems to have given up in exactly the same place. It has not stretched up or opened up and is now more yellow than green🥺

The good news is another seedling did break ground so we’re back to 9 out of 12.😎

There’s still a chance the last two may surface, but it looks like they all need a bit of water today. I am really babying these things, so I will be punching a bunch of small holes in the lid of a water bottle, duplicating a watering can so that I don’t disturb the plants/roots too much in the extremely loose soil.

Still killing it! So if half are male, You might get four or five! How many are you planning on running? What do you have the space for?

Thanks, I was happy to see a decent germination rate.

I hope to run all of them, male and female. I plan on separating the males to collect the pollen and then do a controlled pollination of the females. Essentially it would be similar to an open pollination except I will be able to identify which fathers contributed to which seeds.
Of course I have big dreams of breeding the best of them, but I may not be able to manage them indoors which may force them into flower. Or, they may hermie on me, but hopefully not.🤞

I hear you! You never know how these primitive plants are going to grow! Until you’ve done it! Sounds good! In my experience, they grow in such horrible soil at home, if you give them some decent soil and food, they really pretty themselves up and go to town! Not the scraggly pictures you see of them, sometimes in their homeland!😁

Sweet! It’s the rare Bird is willing to tackle a true land race indoors! How was the end result? Hopefully you weren't Sorry you grew it.👍 I’m starting to dabble in them outdoors! Did OK last summer! Most of them are destined for dry sifting!😍

Grew some of these last fall, watch for powdery mildew. 3-4 weeks from germ males show, females are 4-5 weeks. View attachment 2390800
Very nice, thanks for posting! I appreciate the tips/pointers. 👍
Of course, I have lots of questions, but I’ll try to keep it to a minimum, lol

What was your lighting schedule when they showed sex?

Do you recall the quality of the smoke, flavor/smell and was there much variety between them (looks like three or four plants?)?

Just curious if they’re going for dry sifting because that’s your preference, or was there an issue with the bud quality or flavour?
I am all about effects, but flavour is primary for me. I like to keep some tasty buds on hand and those that don’t make the grade go to bubble hash.

. No,there was nothing wrong with the plants, or the buds other than being on the larfy side. The Arcadian bud was a little more solid! But it is a smoking strain! The panjshir Is more of a hashing strain! But if you give them a good tight trim, it is eminently smokable! L O L! But a lot of that central Asian stuff Is only used for hash. I don’t think most of them smoke it any other way! But I started sifting a little over a year ago and it’s a lot of fun and a challenge! I will save some of this land race to smoke! But most will be sifted like everything I grow! I try and keep to the Ways and customs of the area where the strain comes from. And with an Afghani, that pretty much means, make hash out of it, mix it with tobacco, and smoke it! Right up my alley! Ha ha ha! It all tasted good! But I smoke for a effect!😆✌️

Agreed,…hash plants aren’t always so tasty until they’re turned into hash 👌

I guess what I’m trying to say is, you see those afghanis dressed in white with big beards, sitting outside the hut, smoking a hash laced cigarette! Do they look like they’re worried about what it taste like? That’s me! With land races it’s just As much about the grow and experiencing the Plant as it is about the result! They have an aura about them! And they can grab you! Especially if you’re tired of the modern stuff! And if you’re outdoors! Growing the modern stuff for three summers, I find myself going, Yep! Pretty much like last year! Yep! Pretty much like last year’s! Yep! Pretty much like last year’s! The only thing that changed was the name! So something had to be done, and this is it!😂🍻

Some Panjshir bud getting ready to fulfill its Destiny! The screens! But you could trim this tighter and get some damn good smoke out of it! More importantly, different smoke out of it!

These would honestly do well outdoors if it’s not too humid. I’m in Minnesota and far too swampy by me unfortunately. They’d do well with our growing season i think, but i live on a creek with a million aphids 😂 Mango/ citrus terps on mine. Not a terrible joint smoke, definitely good hash/ breeding plants 👍🏻

Haha no worries.

I would consider these autoflowering for all standard purposes. They will flower with 18 hours of light. Caught me off guard and I had to move them to a new space 😂

Now technically speaking they are “day neutral” which means they will flower based on maturity. Which happens to be about 4-5 weeks after germination. This is due to the proximity to the equator where sudan gets 12 hours of sunlight year round with very little variation (I have an ex who is Sudanese actually).

After they began flowering I had them on an 11/13 schedule just to make sure.

I popped 4 and had 1 male and 3 females. Fairly uniform christmas tree shapes, I didn’t top any of them. One had more hair/ less bud growth. But all foxtail sativa like stricture with mango/ citrus terps. Not a terrible smoke, but nothing close to modern strength.
