I'm getting ready to do some major growroom mods and wanted to know what hydro-growers thought of single-site, stand alone units with a single air-bubbler - as opposed to RDWC system replete with a reservior and pump.

As I turn over the design options in my head, I'm thinking of this list of pros & cons for a RDWC with a res - as opposed to stand-alone buckets with netpots:

Pro:
- Check nutes, temp, and pH from a single point
- Fill a single point
- More powerful?

It stands to reason that prodigious water flow accompaning the nute solution would stimulate more nutrient uptake.

Cons:
-More expensive/complicated
-Plumbing inherently increases the risk of leaks
-More water, more nutrients in the system at a time
-No PPM adjustments for strain

What other considerations should I have?

What have folks discovered after building their system that they didn't anticipate?

you're missing the most important piece of RDWC..... nutrient solution temperature control! the major issue with DWC is the temp of the nutrient solution. with RDWC you can fix this.

I was under the impression that increased temperature of the nutrient solution was a result of being constantly cycled through an electric impeller . . . ?

I painted my pilot DWC bucket white and under the HPS the water stays at room temp . . .

res temps can be fixed in dwc as well..I run One DWC..been looking at the rdwc .But for me I move plants from veg room to flower room and it seems more diffacult to move a rdwc then just one bucket..Thats my stand on it..I do run a few along side my soils..good luck on your upgrade

Do you not get allgea growing in res? white paint will allow light inside to root zone..you also say when lights on your temps fine...what about at dark cycle?..i use a small fish tank heater set at 68 works for me..

I move my 10" netpots from veg to my rdwc with no problem...MPB system...

Your pro and cons list is right on..

Room temp is asking for problems most around here run there water temps at or below 68...

Good luck...

yep, you can move the plants just grab the net pot and move it to the other room, water temp water temp water temp soooo important I keep mine at 68

so instead of moveing the whole bucket..you just move the plant and the top. My net is part of the lid..lol..ya not worried about the roots eh?:bong-hits:..thanks for clearing this up 4me:cool0010:

where are you fellas living that you have to set a heater to 68? as the summer approaches this is the time that dwc and especially aero units start getting warmer res temps and things get funky. a chiller resolves this which any good rdwc setup has.

i just bought a 5 gal net pot lid and i have a extra air pump and brand new stone and even a un opened roll of aluminum tape so i plan on making a dwc to give it a shot IF i have enough hydroton left once i fill up my ebb and grow.

The amount of heat from the pump is nothing compared to the heat from the light(s)....airpumps can probably add more heat to the water than pumps do.

But what is your room temp?? Unless it is constantly 65-70f, the room temp is to warm for the water...but then again if your garden air was that cool then your plants would be less happy, lol!
Room temp 75-80
water temp 65-68...and your money!!:rasta2:
Proper water temps are crucial in any type of dwc system...it's waay easier to accomplish with rdwc.

Veg with 3 gallon buckets for 3 weeks and transfer to my 27 gallon toughboxes.. Doesn't hurt the roots at all...

Pics are 2 weeks into flower

Gimme an "R"

DWC without the R is like reinventing the wheel on a weekly basis.....

if you dig your DWC step up to the bigs and make life easier on yourself.

I painted the netpot lid white (the lid, not the net), the bucket is a black, opaque bucket from a hydro store.

That's my setup - I veg in my basement and then have to move everything upstairs to flower - instead of dragging around buckets of water I was hoping just to move lids around.

I hadn't thought of that!

My room temp is usually 80 - 82 - at least since March started.

I'll be needing an A/C here before April is over.

I dread to think how hot the water in the bucket has been - but the plant, as I type these words, is now a HUGE, beautiful, GDP - it might be one of my best looking plants of all time. I'm thrilled with it.

Haha. Clever.

Yea - I really dig this setup. I've never seen a plant grow as fucking fast as this DWC did under a 6500K 42w CFL. Just one. Twenty inches in ten days. Blew my hair back.

I'm sold.

RDWC it is.

I ran a single dwc before, the plant did great, the water temps were super high, like 80*. I was adding H202 everyday which I now realized kept the rot away, then at wk 6 the roots turned into a blueboy. smell so bad I almost puked
