I was having a bit of a problem with a groundhog being a bad neighbor so I opened up a hole around his den in the brush line (about 10 ards of wildness between me and the church parking lot). I figured he'd be mad at not having privacy and just leave. Things escalated and since I'm in suburb land I can't use explosives like any normal person would. He's gone now though.
BUT I FOUND THIS.
Technically it's not mine to free from vines and cherish but I think I'm going to because it's not like the church cares. Or I care if they do. It's too cool, they can try to argue the value of vines in small claims I guess. I'm giving this thing freedom to be it's rad self.
Looks like Captain grew the damn thing lol.

Looks like a trail tree (but prolly not old enough)

Trail trees (also called "marker trees" or "bent trees") — a brilliant and underappreciated part of Native American land navigation and resource marking systems.

🌲 What Are Trail Trees?
Native American tribes across North America used bent saplings — typically oak, maple, or other pliable trees — to create permanent directional markers.

These trees were tied, weighed down, or even carved when they were young, forcing them to grow in unnatural, distinct shapes — often with a sharp horizontal bend low to the ground, then growing upward again.

🎯 What Did They Mark?

They weren’t random — they were deliberate signs pointing to:

  • 🔹 Water sources (springs, streams)
  • 🔹 Fishing holes
  • 🔹 Prime hunting grounds
  • 🔹 Safe campsites
  • 🔹 Burial grounds
  • 🔹 Trail junctions
  • 🔹 Sacred sites or village routes

They were like living road signs, grown slowly and intentionally to be visible for generations.

🪢 How Were They Made?

The tribe would:

  1. Select a young, flexible sapling
  2. Bend it in a specific direction — often horizontal or U-shaped
  3. Tie it down with leather, sinew, or rocks to hold the shape
  4. Sometimes notch or carve the trunk as additional ID
  5. As the tree matured, it would keep that permanent unnatural form, often with the bend at a consistent height off the ground (like 3–4 feet)

Many still exist today, and you can see the signature bend and upward growth pattern — often impossible to attribute to natural causes.

🧭 Regional Usage
  • The Cherokee in the Southeast are especially well-documented users of these trees.
  • Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Comanche, and many others used variations — depending on terrain and purpose.
  • In some areas they also used stacked stones, carvings, or broken limbs for shorter-term guidance.
🌳 How to Spot a Real One

Authentic trail trees will often:
  • Have a sharp 90° or curved bend low to the trunk
  • Then grow straight upward from that point
  • Be old and large (100+ years easy)
  • Point toward a feature or direction of note (e.g., water, pass, cave)
  • Often grow in isolation (not part of storm damage or natural weirdness)

There are websites and maps that catalog suspected and confirmed trail trees. If you’re interested, I can help you find ones near your area or put together a field guide-style reference.

it’s bigger than the gelato from last year,. that pot it’s in is only 17-18 gallons,.. i’d say we are just entering stretch and fill in stage,. around aug 10 is 14 hours light,.

So its been a beast here the last couple of days. Aside from putting finishing touches on the trans am. And rebuilding the fuel system, running the new main fuel line here in a couple hours. Then we prime it and let her sit a day. Then its fire in the fucking hole 🔥

My central ac decided to shit the bed, so after putting in window units yesterday taking apart and cleaning out the exterior compressor housing on two of the 4 window units, and starting the trouble shooting process for the ac, i cooked in my attice for a few hours unnessesarily going over the coil and wiring up there i go outside and start tearing into the outdoor unit.

So capacitors? G2g
Relay? G2g
Compressor? G2g (thank the jeebus)

Wife sent me to the store for a gallon of milk and then she said if they have avocado's, pick up two. So I showed up with two gallons of milk like she asked and now she's all pissed off. She handed me a bag of potatoes and told me to go peel half. I'm not gonna screw this up....
