I would say it mostly depends on your environment. Around here it’s been very humid and plants are basically dripping every morning so I will be out today to do some thinning out on the inner parts of the plants. If you’re in a dry environment probably not necessary at all.
Heya farmer here’s what I do not saying it’s the right thing for you to do. I have dew just about every morning lately. I start on the side of the prevailing winds. Start br cleaning up the bottom of the plants about 12 inches then if you can imagine putting in a big chimney from the basement to the roof buy taking out larger leaves from the bottom to the top. Until you have enough of opening for air flow from bottom to the top. Dive in there head first and getter done. If your plant has a lot of side branches you may consider removing one that is blocking the air flow best to do this by loosing some rather than getting PM or bud rot especially on plants that have an excessive amount of leaves I’ll show you a picture of one of my plants that was totally blocking air flow before I had to get aggressive with it.I know the chimney analogy is kinda silly but it works for me lol 😝 best of luck to you!!!

Question for the more knowledgeable.

At what point during bud development do u remove the larger fan leaves, if at all.

I ask, only because my one plant ( California Orange ) is still so green and full of leaves and buds. My understanding is at some point u should defoliate the plant some.....just not sure when, or if I even need to, for an outdoor plant.

I don't like cutting off good greens, so is this step actually necessary.?!
i wouldn’t remove any for the sake of removing,.
my buddy kept asking me if he should defoliant and remove lower branches i said dint don’t do it,. if a plant is going to get mildew mold etc than it’ll get it regardless of trimming or not and more so if trimmed,..
well he didn’t listen to me but listened to another grower here who told him to clean it up,. a week after that now he has wpm when 2 other friends here didn’t defoliant the same strain buddy’s growing and there’s not a speck of mildew,.. healthy green plants is your best defense!,..

I’m with GNick. If bud rot is an airborne pathogen, opening up the plant gives it a free range on the whole thing. If you get bud rot, it’s not on you. There’s a ton of opinions on weed plants. I tell my friends, what other plant do you go out and take all the leaves off? I know winery’s have their grapes hanging down to keep air flow so they don’t mold up . But I’m just another dumb ass giving his opinion, for what it’s worth.

I personally don't like to remove fan leaves until they die off. But that depends on your climate. It's hot dry and breezy where I'm at so no need.

A few shots from the greenhouse this morning. Everybody is getting a dose of compost/castings tea this weekend. Pest control manager is on patrol.

Thanks y'all.

Wasn't my intention to actually start cutting away, did all that during veg.

She's doing great as she is...I'm very pleased at this point with it. She started as a ugly duckling, when I planted her in the ground. Tall, lanky, topped at fifth node, knocked off couple branches and buried it deeper in the ground.

I had to do something to keep it from climbing, and create more vertical branches so I applied LST, until I couldn't, and it became a bush. It doubled in size, during stretch.

Not too much longer now, I started taking some branches off the bottom of the runt so I had something to smoke on for a bit. I'd say we are a month or so from chop.

On September 8, we had an overnight Low of 37°, the next day my “ethos 10th planet” turned purple in some areas. In the last couple days she has started to wilt. So yesterday I watered it well. Today it is even more wilted. The next thing I noticed was around the drip line of the tree where some rodent tunnels. Before this that plant was happy and healthy. The other plants in the garden are doing well. Any suggestions, thoughts, ideas??

I can relate. Best I can tell ya, is keep picking off the dead and yellow, and let her ride. Mine did the same thing. But I'm still feeding and watering twice a week.

Bud production is still happening, and I gave up worrying, with around three weeks and some to go.

Mine does looks lively in the morning, but once in full sunlight, the leaves start to droop, like it's thirsty.

if your sure it’s not needing a watering than next thought is fusarium wilt

Alright we’ve harvested from 5 of our plants, between yesterday evening and this afternoon, left some of all to finish up in the next week or so. Overall pretty satisfied with what I saw in the bowls of finished buds.

The Ed Rosenthal Super Chocolate caught my eye all season and when we got to checking it today it was gushing rosin, most expensive seed I’ve ever purchased but at this point no regrets and 2 more of them still out there. Those are the 3 pics below

I will feel better having gotten this far if we have rain tomorrow and it’s supposed to be a one day storm then back to dry and more harvest bliss. In fact I am gonna go add to my bliss right now.
Enjoy your evening or nights wherever you are 👍

The rodent holes sound concerning. If it is voles they are eating your roots
