Her issue isn't just to do with what something contains, it's to do with the form. She feels that it's important that things not be chopped up into little bits unless it's specifically warranted, as that affects how much time it spends in the gut, which affects nutrient availability and a whole host of other processes that occur when we first commence to digest.

l'm guilty of taking supplements, protein and creatine is all though. l always try and get my protein through chicken, shrimp, turkey or lean ham but sometimes l have to drink that protein shake l just dont always have time to prepare something for myself

You two hear any bad things about the protein, or creatine??

I would check into whats in that protien shake, malto dextrin is in some and that actualy feeds cancer cells. Nutri plex has an awesome protien supplement thats whole food derived.Dont feel guilty doing something you believe in. We all have our ways. What is the brand of shake your drinking? One of the best protien sources are farm fresh eggs from paustured chickens, raw is best, kinda gnarly but i actually love the flavor of a egg the second it comes out of the hens butt, its actually called the vent. When collecting eggs If I see an egg laid I crack open and eat it. It tastes warm, real egg like and nutty, just incredable, and an awesome source of live raw protien....Not too sure about creatine, but them raw frsh farm eggs cant be beat as far as protien source. It actualy is a pick me up...instant energy..Raw foods like milk, cheese also are unbeatable protien sources. Raw milk raw cheese and eggs are alive with active energy, when cooked or pasturized it becomes dead, no live energy, just not the same. If you can find raw whole milk I guarantee it would be way better than that shake...CM

Why thank you CM!

The protein brand l prefer is Myoplex, and it has Corn Maltodextrin and also Carrageenan. l've heard some bad juju about that stuff too...

lf that nutri plex company has a web-site shoot me a link and l might just check out that protein supplement of theirs. Might not taste as good, but if its gonna be healthier and the protein is more readily available in it, i'll give it a shot when l run out of the Myoplex l have left

Thanks for the info guys

No, but be careful in using soy protein isolates and other soy products, as cancers have been linked to processed soy products.

Also, believe it or not EAS makes an excellent protein bar that I wouldn't recommend living on, but it's a great meal replacement if you're in a hurry, doesn't have a shitload of sugar or fat, tastes very good and has a lot of protein.

I would love to see papers on the maltodextrin thing, CM.

Spinkus, I recommend that you also eat more BEANS. With rice, is nice. I'll put up a recipe I devised all on my own, not quite as tasty as full-on Puerto Rican style, but it's very healthy.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Frijoles 'Peruano'

  • 1lb Peruano beans
  • 6-8 Cups water
  • 2-4 bay leaves
  • ¼ C oil (I would not use extra virgin olive oil in this case because it is cooked)
  • 1 tsp whole cumin seeds
  • 1 med green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 med onion, white or yellow, chopped
  • OPTIONAL: Tomato in some form—paste, sauce, puree, or chopped fresh
  • 2-6 cloves garlic, chopped or crushed
  • 1-4 serrano or jalapeňo chilis, sliced or chopped (deveined and seeded if preferred), green or red
  • 1 T fresh oregano, chopped (or 2 tsp dry, crumbled by hand)
  • 1½-2 tsp Kosher salt (salt to taste)
  • 1 bunch cilantro, chopped and halved
  • ½lb banana squash, cubed
  • ½lb potatoes, cubed

  1. Wash and clean the beans, removing damaged beans.
  2. Place in stock pot with water and half the bay leaves, over medium heat, and cook for 30 mins.
  3. While beans are cooking, in a separate small frying pan, add 1-2 tablespoons of oil to the pan and allow to heat til shimmering, then add cumin seeds. Fry for a few minutes, until it begins to become fragrant and some browning is occurring.
  4. These next steps are basically making a sofrito. Add bell pepper and onions, fry for a little while longer until they become tender and begin to brown slightly.
  5. Add garlic and hot peppers, fry for a few minutes more, until it becomes fragrant.
*If you're going to add tomato, this would be the time, especially if it's paste.
  6. Just before you're going to add this back to the beans, add the oregano and half the chopped cilantro, cook til heated through, then add carefully to the beans.
(Probably when this is added to the beans will determine how much of their own creamy flavor will be retained, versus picking up more fragrance and flavor from the herbs and spices that have been fried together instead of boiled.)
  7. After the beans have cooked for 30 minutes, add the squash, potatoes and 1 tsp salt. Cook for an additional 30 minutes.
  8. Taste and adjust for seasonings.
  9. At this point you may wish to add the remaining oil, and here some fresh extra virgin olive oil will give an excellent fragrance to the soup.
  10. Serve alone or over medium- or short-grained white rice. Cooked onions, til deep golden-brown, make a great accompaniment over the top as well.

Thanks SM, next time l head into the store i'll pick up a few of those ingredients im missing and give those a go!

Looks like a big enough recipe that l could eat on it all throughout the week, just heat some beans and rice up quick style when im on the go.

l know beans are as high as anything in protein too and maybe i'll cook a lean ham steak with it on the first night just for a little extra!

Thanks again for the recipe SM, sounds delicious

Beans + rice = complete protein source. No need for the steak. And yes, it's fantastic to make a big pot (the amounts given are not hard or fast) along with enough rice to last the week, and have it with lunch or alongside anything else I might make for dinner because it's really nice to have a full dinner and then have rice & beans along with it.

I will also use difference squashes, for instance, cheyote, aka choko or merleton, a vine squash that grows best in the tropics/subtropics, is firm enough to withstand some cooking and is absolutely DELICIOUS along with the sweet potatoes and beans. You can use any type of sweet potato you like, too, whether it be the white ones or the ones we call yams. I bet you could put in yuca, too. The original recipe I worked from used potatoes, but I like sweet potatoes better plus they're a lot healthier for you.

And don't be afraid to add more vegetables, either!

Oh you're kidding! Then you've also had empanadillas aplenty, tostones, platanos maduros (I fucking love those! make me fat)... what else? Pasteles, yes? My grandmother has a recipe for Isla Flotante that is off the flipping hook, made with guava paste and limones. (She wrote a cook book back in the 90s, Cooking in San German.) I should have taken all the recipes I found at the house last year instead of leaving them for my cousin to get.

I'm rambling... this is some good smoke.

Tostones are when you take the green plantains, when they're starchy like a potato, you cut them into 2" pieces, fry them, squash them and fry them again. Then you eat them standing in the kitchen, bitching about how they're burning your fingers and mouth.

Now I didn't get enough of my buddies mom's cooking, but I certainly do miss those Puerto Rican Ladies. Especially the ones who are a little more well fed. They are the epitome of sassy! Not enough of them on the left coast.

you can see my exit on the opening of the sopranos (Im almost positive it was 13a) - I used to be able to see the verazonos bridge from my house and we used to catch 3 eye fish in the arthur kill

my house was also the closest to that big refinery explosion in 1980 I think it was
