Hey Everyone,

I am not a master builder, but spent much time pondering before I started building.

My goal was to build a table for pots that could roll & light weight, yet could be later converted into a grow bed with adding rails and plastic in short order.

I have a large space so mine is 5 X 12 and table will sit 15 inches from ground.

If you dont' have as much space or don't want to cut as much, simply do a 4 x 8 table/bed.

I made legs out of 2 - 2x4s because I had scraps sitting around, otherwise use 4X4s to save time and make stronger.

I went with 12 x 1 s for the rails so that half could be above my table and half below for support.
The shorter side supports are all 4 x 1 s by 5feet for keeping it light weight yet under support.

I built the long sides first and put a leg on each side, then the middle leg. 6 legs for maximum support and agility, 4 would probably be fine for a shorter table.

Once both side were done I added a 4 x 1 between each let as you can see and lowered it just enough so my side supports would be same height as my legs (so the plywood would rest perfectly on top of all supports).

Then I connect my 5 foot sides on each end and then each support 5 foot 4 x 1 boards. Drill the holes first to keep from splitting the wood. Screw them snug, NOT SUPER TIGHT.

Then I added my casters. I went with cast IRON 2 inch swivel, but my friend recommends using FIXED, so your choice. I already bought them, so am using them and can always change wheels later if needed.

Should be able to just cut my 4 x 8 plywood to be 4X5 and cut 3 of them and should fit perfect. Haven't gotten this part done but wanted to get the post started.

Last will be a trellis, which I will use 1/2 PVC. Pictures later.

Will post final pictures later this week once I add plywood table surface.

Ah, good idea. I will connect the bottom of the legs to give it more strength.
It will hold 900 LBS once full on watering days, less when dry.

is some of that 1" material???

*NM, re-read, it is....

yep 1'' wood is being used.

My goal was to make it very light weight. I didn't want a table I couldn't move.

I am going to do testing before I load up with pots. I think with some additional boards on bottom, it will do just fine.
The weight is distributed over each leg and reinforced 4x4 legs can hold 250 LBS. I can also add a leg to the middle if needed which would bring leg weight down to under 200.

What you need to have done (& can still do) is to turn your slats 90* so that they are on end, basically flush with whatever they are currently sitting on. These are basically your joists for the floor of you table (ie ply). This will not only strengthen your structure but allow for no sagging with the ply. Wood has more tensile strength on end rather than laying flat. Align them so that they are 2' on center, this way you'll minimize cutting your ply. Personally I would have used all 2x4 material, this 1" material looks a little flimsy. Just trying to help you out, fwiw I'm a carpenter.

No doubt about it 2x4s are stronger. Going with 5/8 plywood would be way stronger too. Also adds a shit ton of weight to the beast. :)
I like your idea about putting my boards the other way.. good idea.

Once done I will do some testing walking around on it and see how it feels.

Thickness of you ply has nothing to do with it; it could be 1/4" if you wanted. You'd just have to adjust your joists accordingly.

It all starts with a sturdy foundation.

@mcpuffin - If I did turn the boards the other way how would I fasten then? With gussets?

What size screws are you using?

You need to start from the outside screwing through you rails into the joist. Again, I'd have gone with 2x4s because not only will you have more surface area to screw into, but your ply will have more surface area to rest upon, especially when you butt two pieces of ply together.

@mcpuffin thanks for the advice. I added bottom support and moved cross supports up and down like joices. Way better and stronger! Thank you...some updated pictures included...

Should support 1000 lbs easily.which will handle 40, 4 gallon pots watered and trellis... Am hoping to fit more than 40 pots.. but would have to likely move down to 2 or 3 gallon pots and not sure I want to.. anyway not meaning to take this thread anywhere else.just meant to give a rough idea of the capacity..
Actually the 4 gallon pots only take one square foot, so really could do 5 X 12 so 60 pots....

@Amber those are cool... Wonder if they make them in 5 by 12 !
