Hello, I have a grow tent with 8 plants stuck under a 600 watt light. I was thinking of putting a couple of other lights into the tent, maybe energy saving ones ( uses 20 watts but gives off 100 watts of light) to add some more light to the grow. Is this a waste of energy or could the extra light help with the grow? Thanks for your help :)

It depends on what kind of light your 600 watter is. If it's a HPS or MH type, probably not. If it's a T5 or something with less penetration into the canopy, yes. See the link in my signature block for a way to use CFL's to supplement light. I like to drop these down the sides of plants that need extra light.

I use T5's for flowering and really like them. You have to have the right light fixture to use these, they won't work in a standard fixture.

Thanks for your reply Ambre :) I use HPS 600 w lights. I have a big grow tent for 8 plants so there was plenty of room to stick a few more lights in that would hopefully affect the yield. But if you don't think I need any more then I will leave what I have alone.

I currently use 432w of T5s to supplement my 600w Mhs/HPS light.
I'm only doing it because my plant numbers got too high but have though about running single T5 bulbs down low around the perimeter permanently. Good luck.

And yes that is a single bud growing in a 2gallon pot on the right. :)

Do you think 12 of these 4 ft bulbs hanging over 42 five-gal buckets in an ebb & flow would be enough for some bushy indicas, Big Bud ?

ViaVolt Model # VT54B-10 Internet # 203891792
54-Watt 4 ft. T5 Fluorescent Replacement Lamp (10-Pack)

2. FLOWER 830 2700K HO Red Spectrum T5:

NO.
That's what 675watts for 40+ plants ?

I have used t5s for flowering. You need 4x 4" (108w per plant) bulbs per 2 plants minimum. So for 42 plants you would need like 80+ 4" T5bulbs. You need about 6-8 1000w HPS lights for that many buckets. But I'm just personal grower. Good luck !

Thanks Frank! And no they are regulars from seed which is the only way I like to grow , have tried some fems before though. But I can understand doing autofems, especially with space or law limitations. Best of luck!

Yo @ShroomKing , if you don't mind me asking what is that on top of the soil? Looks like straight perlite but I couldnt tell!

The landscapers around my building breed fungus gnats like crazy so I use smart pots topped with gnat gnix , a recycled glass product that works good for me. Gnats visit but are unable to reach my roots.

So... I read that for veg, one ViaVolt 25-watt bulb would cover 3' x 3' and need to be 12-18 inches from the plant. So I thought one of these per plant would suffice. That comes to just 10$ per plant for veg. But is that way too little light, then? I need 4 times that much -- 40$ per plant, for veg?

You need to research watts per plant. I can tell you that 25w bulb would be bare minimum lighting for a small , I mean tiny , plant in a 1gallon pot. Good luck.

I've been reading, but the change with CFL's from watts to lumen confuses me. Plus I read that even lumen are not the final answer since which parts of the spectrum is vital. And I'm not sure about my square footage.

I use a 3.5x 3.5 7 ft gl 120 quite similar in size to your tent op. Ive used this set-up since 2004 and I haven't looked back lmao shit I just bought more tents actually. Up to three tents now one for males, one for vegetation and one for 12/12 however I will put males in isolation closet and sometimes alternate two tents for 12/12 and what ive found to be ideal lighting set-up is a air cooled cooltube 600 watt eye hortilux paired with 6000k blue ho t-5 54 watts a piece 4 ft fixtures (4 of them two on either side of the cooltube) as supplemental lighting that can be brought up and down to varying heights as needed. Tent pic far right corner lol, look at that bushy bitch!
