I'm going to put up a temp hoop house to finish the last 3 weeks. I'm up in the 530 and it's about to get some nasty weather starting Thursday. Looking for some suggestions/pointers...

My plants are in a 20x12 caged area. I plan to use 3 rows of 3/4 pvc about 30'. I will be using 3/4 pvc clamps over the pipe along with poly plastic. It's UV rated on the outside and Anti condensation rated inside.

I'm curious about humidity inside, but hoping to have enough of a opening to allow sufficient air movement. My buddy was hit down south last Wednesday and had mold and said he lost all kinds of trics? I thought trics were water soluble? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Advice for temp hoop house Oh after the storm should i remove this? Or should i just leave it? I'm up at 3500' so a frost could drop anytime.

You better get some fans in there, at the very least. The hoop house will trap humidity creating and ideal environment for mold, an opening at the end will not allow enough air flow. You definitely want to remove the cover after the storms passes if it is sunny. Rain, followed by heat and sun, in an environment that has limited air flow will fuck your crop. Have you considered just doing an A-frame type set up with open ends? That will allow more airflow. You need to be really careful with set ups like you describe, they can end up working against you and make your mold problem even worse.

No i haven't thought about the A frame... I'm in a bind as my moms is the one taking care of these 5 hrs away. Hoop house seems to be something a lot of peeps used i thought. Care to share a little more info on the A frame?

I'm running cherry pie and Chernobyl, i know a guy who had his pie sit in rain for 3 days and had no mold problems... maybe just pure luck. I figured if i at least cover it i could salvage some of it. Hate to lose it all to rain with only a few weeks left. The hoops are easy to assemble and cheap. Really was hoping this would work..sigh

Oh and the tarps on the sides of the cages are already restricting air flow. The only difference would be the amount of space above. I was thinking just raise it up to allow more air. No fans, no power to this caged area. Really it's hard enough getting my 65 yr old mom to take of these. she's already not happy with eye sore for the hoops im going to put up! Ok i'm ranting enough now lol

Not sure if it helps but I have one of these coming

They make a 10x20x9 , alittle pricey I guess, but if I needed to make it that big, or just purchase a pre made, I would go premade. Now I will say I havent built a hoop that big, so Im not sure what the materials and labor cost would be, plus time with weather changing. I used my prime with free shipping , 3 day. Should be here tomorrow, I am working on my base now. The reviews were good and if I get a couple years out of the 8x10x8 Ill be happy. If nothing else now I can play outside in the rain ;) Hope it helps, and if not good luck with the weeks end weather

Yea that won't happen, but i appreciate the 411. My buddy said his trics are coming back! I'm just going to roll the pvc set up and hope for the best. I'll try and make it A frame style...I'm leaving 5am on Wednesday and that's too pricey. Thanks man! I'll take some pix and post on Thursday or Friday.

You just run a cable or a rope over the length of the garden and then suspend some greenhouse plastic or clear poly tarps over it, and tie the ends down. Basically you put up a 'roof' over the plants. The open ends and sides help with airflow and don't trap so much humidity. It is also really easy to put up and take down. Won't help hold any heat in though.

I'm going to hold off for now.. looks like the rain will only be for a day. Plus moms is bitching it's gonna be an eye sore and more work. The weather fucks made it sound like 4 days straight and extreme down pour. These clowns are the only people that can be wrong and keep their jobs! Thanks for the heads up though. I'm thinking i can just cover the cage with the clear plastic and open up the back where the tarp is to to help with air flow. Girls are starting to stack finally.

Happy, I've never seen water melt trichomes, and if it did then why is cleaning up after trimming such a pain in the ass? It doesn't. All I can add is listen to Blaze. Or, do what I'm doing (I'm in the foothills in the 209, so my climate is likely more like yours than like Blaze's)--just trellis and support them. Get tarps and that shit off, get Hortonova around them to prevent the buds from hitting the dirt. Rain on them isn't the worst thing in the world. Mold will destroy them, for sure. Work smarter, not harder!

Sea i appreciate the suggestions, my hands are tied though. It's my mom's yard and under her guidelines. If it was me i would be doing things completely different. She has the tarps on the side of the cage because highway patrol lives next door to her.

She just recently shot me down for the hoop set up. There is trellis netting in their, so hopefully it's not too bad of a down pour. So you think just throwing clear plastic over the top of the cage is more problematic?

I know some people that just let it go and if they have the right strain no problems. Again really not up to me to decide. I agree with trics reacting to water. I feel like my buddy is tripping, and now he claims they're coming back! lol

Yes, I do and, more importantly Blaze does. I know him personally and he's a fine grower and has a LOT of experience dealing with wet, humid conditions. Much moreso than I have. Seems your mother forced your hand on that issue either way, but I personally think it's better given our climate. Just double check your ladies, or you can do what I do and give a light spritzing, see whose dicks fall in the dirt. ;)

If the tarps are just on the sides, that shouldn't be a problem. Don't tell your mom that the CHP can probably smell your girls and knows what's up already. They ain't stupid.

Have plenty of isopropyl on hand for post-storm. Applying it will really hasten evaporation. Also, know that you can shake the living SHIT out of your girls, but be gentle while the buds are still heavy with water. Even if you do snap a stem, as long as it's not broken through it can be taped together long enough to finish harvest, easy peasy. :)

Much love! Yeah i know the CHP is smelling my cherry pie every night when the sun sets! The wind is blowing his direction..lol;):D
They say it's going to be a AM rain and then clear up, so hopefully with dry climate and some wind it won't be to bad! She'll send me some pix after the rain.

  1. It rains every year just hope you tied trellised caged or whatever you did holds the branches in the rain other than that your buds will be just fine I live in the same area as you. You'll have a little rot in the end but nothing enough to worry abt building hoops and pulling tarps and all that headache and honestly I've seen people In our area with hoops and green house set ups to keep them dry and the seem to get more mold by what was said above no air movement or fresh air coming in and old air out. Don't stress. If the branches don't break itll be all good .They love the rain.
