Could that be why she's growing slower? Because of the light? Can I just cover the container with a dark bag?

5 gallon buckets take forever to dry out, with my small plant in my 5 gallon bucket I only have to water it about once a week.

I know I've been watering too much to often, and I got gnats. The 5G seems to dry out way faster than the clear container and I can't forgive out how. I'll wrap something around that clear pot in the morning.

Dont water it unless it feels light and the top few inches of the soil are dry and dusty.

Yeah, my soils been pretty wet it seems, I stuck my hand down the side in the dirt and it's still pretty wet down there. I fluffed up the dirt this morning. Any tips on amount of water I should give per watering? I think that's my problem, too much water.

If you let it dry out good you should water it until it starts running out of the drain holes.

Okay then I might try that. I always worry filling it until it comes out the drain holes, I feel like that's way too much water.

Watering it until it has runoff helps prevent buildup of salts in the soil and nutrient lockout.

I haven't had problems with that yet I don't believe but I have had problems with fungal gnats. Due to it being wet for so long.

Put a 2 to 3 inch layer of sand or some other top dressing on top of the dirt. If the gnats cant get to the soil to lay eggs they will go somewhere else, and the larvae in your soil will smother trying to escape from the sand when they molt.

Those side branches on the broad leaf one are really popping now :smoking:
You can prune some of the early inward growing shade leaves, so the tops get out of each other's way while the plant opens into a nice bush.

I really meant the inner shoots that will grow from the next few nodes. But yeah you could prune those lowers too, not a bad idea. Once plant gets bigger there might be few too many main branches as it is now, and those lower ones look scrubby anyway.

With broad leaf varieties the nodes grow close together and so new inward angled shade leaves will clog up the canopy, and not favor even growth of your tops (for best quality and yield). That's why some people like to top the plant like you did but instead focus the growth into just 2 or 4 main trunks, often referred to as 'mainlining' on this forum. Then those mains get spread out and the lower/inner shoots pruned to let the plant open up into whatever size and shape canopy you want.

You can keep topping and pruning, or stop at fewer tops, but I'd advise leaving at least 4inch squares for each top/branch/cola, and let that dictate the number. That's for your CFL setup, they'd need more grid spacing for bigger lights. Your narrow leaf plant should probably do this on its own more easily, just be sure to top at every node or things could get stretchy quick. Since your lights aren't so intense, it'll be better to keep the canopy as short as possible, and be ready to prune off any lowers that don't get good light.
