Greetings honest farmers!

Wanted to ask about saving the genetics of a strain that a seed company has discontinued. What is the shelf life of a feminized seed and how should they be properly store for future use??

Technically a seed could be viable for years and years. You're best storing it in a dry, dark place. Moisture is the enemy when trying to store them. Dry packs probably wouldn't hurt.

I save all silica packs from anything i purchase and put them in with my seeds. I keep them in a solid box that blocks light and they've kept for years. I find its a good use for silica packets. People keep them in rice also. Humidity is your number one priority, then extreme temperatures and light.

TY for the replies so far, they make sense. I've been told by someone that seeds weaken after six months and by others they can be kept for years. I know you can only take continual cloning so far too. Also have been told there are some "old school" strains such as Panama Red which seeds are virtually impossible to locate. Not sure if anyone has tried it, but the strain I like is called Nightshade, it is a Barney's Farms pedigree and is discontinued even though I think there may be some out there at various seed bank.

Imo, clone degradation is a myth if a grower is capable of keeping the strain happy. My gorilla glue 4 clone is a clone from a clone x 200 over the past 4+yrs. Not counting how many x it was clones before me. Still as potent as ever and my main strain.

As far as seeds, I have seeds 3+yrs ok. Some have seeds 20+yrs old. If you keep them stored properly, they shohld.last a very long time.
I keep mine in a mason jar with rice, in the fridge. No issues here.

For best results I would Vacuum Seal them, then put them in some really good Heavy Duty BLACK Freezable Containers, with Silica in with them, and freeze them, and make sure the freezer is constant..and DARK. Lots of Silica. Seeds like around 6%-9% Moisture.

Swami still has a couple clones going since the early 80s. Blue Orca, and The One.

They are a cross of 1971 Kandahar Afghani Female x 1976 Dealers Choice Thai, and are Sisters. Same Father 2 different Kandahar Sisters.

Swami also has an original 1985 Cut NL5

Thanks, that was something else I was pondering, freezing.

I do realize clones can be cloned for generations but the idea of saving a strains genetics through cloning could end if a person has to relocate or if where they live experiences a natural disaster.

It just seems strange that a strain like Panama Red which was so abundant and popular decades ago is perhaps extinct or close to being extinct. But thankfully literally thousands of other strains are being created on the other hand.
