Hi all, working on my second grow. My first grow was DWC in a 3 x 3 tent and I had some deficiency/PH issues that I could never fully rectify, but still came out with a good yield of 4.5oz dry. That was with a Northern Lights Special seed from KC Brains. I am now working on growing a Barney’s Farm Pineapple Chunk from seed in my new 5 x 5 x 8 tent. I also upgraded the light from a single 260W quantum to running dual 260W quantums on a light mover. Mixed and matched the color spectrums so it has two 3500K boards and two 2700K boards.

My first grow was left to go all natural and ended up quite bushy and was about 3 feet wide and 30” tall when I harvested. I would have to go back and look in my logs, but I think I had that one in veg until about 15” tall. My current plant has been in 12/12 for just over a week and was in veg for 6 weeks (started counting after 3 sets of real leaves). I also decided to try hot soil for this grow as it would hopefully be easier (and it has :)). I did top this plant when the 6th node was starting to show. I topped it above the third node and then removed the first set of lateral branches to leave four main branches. I was going to top after the second node, but one side of the first set of lateral branches looked really small and stunted so I topped higher and removed the stunted growth. Right now the plant is 35” tall and about 4 feet wide.

After this grow, I have 5 Aurora Indica seeds from Nirvana that I want to grow. My plan is to start all five and then pick the best four. I keep reading about people growing multiple plants in a single grow tent, but in my experience, I don’t see how that is possible. See below picture of the current grow.

Finally, my questions... is it worth growing more than one plant if I have to grow them smaller to fit all 4 in the tent as opposed to growing one single larger plant at a time? Will I yield more with 4 plants at a time than one plant at a time? Are Indica varieties typically more bushy than Sativa?

At this point in the game I am not too worried about my grams to watts ratio but I do want to maximize the use of my lights and my tent. Thanks for taking a look and any feedback is appreciated.

If you want to maximize the use of your lights it's good to grow more plants. Fitting more plants is achieved by short vegetation period. I grow 16 plants in 4x4 area, each has 4 main colas. I switch to 12/12 on days 25 from seed.

By shorter veg period you can can have more harvest per year also.

I'm curious what you mean by "hot soil", seems like your still utilizing some sort of DWC? I'm only a soil grower (and still learning that) (so don't know anything about water culture growing techniques) , and believe it's much less susceptible to problems DWC can present...I think.
That said, more plants, of any sort doesn't put all your expectations into one plant or geome, so more upside potential with more plants...
That quantum light looks very high over the top of the canopy, but that plant looks great.

What kind of yield do you get per plant or per grow?

Last grow was the same but with 3 main tops and I got 0.8 grams per watt but there was space for 4th top. Now with one more main top I should hit gram per watt, I am at last two weeks of flowering.

By hot soil I mean “Kind soil”. That is one manufacturer. Basically it is a high nutrient composted soil. In a 5 gallon pot, like I have in the picture, you put 5 pounds of the soil in the bottom of the pot and then fill the pot with a good, less hot, soil. I used Roots Organic Original. The theory is that the plant uses the nutrients in the top soil for its initial grow, and as the plant gets bigger, the roots start tapping into the hot soil. Since the plant is older and hardened a bit, it can handle the hot soil without nute burn. You water only with plain water that has no nutrients added.

I am not using any sort of hydroponics with this grow. In the picture you can see the fabric pot sitting in a bin. The bin is my safeguard against a run away situation since I am trying out the Blumat automatic watering system. Run Away’s are known to happen, so if it does, the bin will catch the overflow. The line going to the pot is the water feed line. In the front of the pot you can see a white spherical thing. That is a digital moisture meter so I can monitor the soil moisture.

The light is 18” from the top of the canopy and set to about 70,000 lux at that distance. Each pair of boards are on their own driver. Both 3500K on one driver, and the two 2700K boards are on a different driver. Both drivers are pulling 250W at the wall.

Right on. What many watts are you running in that 4x4 tent? Also, do you mind posting a pic of your current grow? Would love to see what it looks like. :)
