I'm getting ready to transplant and have some question before I blow it. My seedling got some stretch, either my light was to high or I left my heat mat temp to high or left it on to long. I took the seedlings in root riot cubes, put them in Solo cups with hydroton in the bottom and buried the stem about 3/4 inch deep in happy frog. I been bottom feeding them since. They are going to 5 gallon buckets of hydroton flood and drain. The plan is to rinse or dunk them in ph water to remove the soil and put them in the buckets.
How deep do I plant the root riot plugs? I've read 1/4 deep into the flood line? But only found 1 thread so I'm sceptical. Some one must have done this before.
BTW, I'm a 64 year old newbie.

Wish I could help but I'm a soil grower. If you have the same cut of wedding cake my boy in CO has, you are in for a treat 👍

One can hope so, I also have Do-Si-Dos. I have 3 of each.

Yea anywhere between 1/2- 1/4 deep above the flood line, as for dunking them to remove the soil just make sure you get pretty much all of it! Getting soil out from roots can be a pain in the butt, but if you dont the organics inside that soil can harbor bad bacteria later on after staying wet too long!

Good Luck! 👍

I want the root riot cubes 1/4-1/2 above the flood line or 1/4-1/2 into the flood line? I only have perhaps a cup of soil in the solo cups, hoping it comes right off dunking them. I mixed happy frog 4/1 with perlite.
Thanks

You want about 1/2 the cube above the flood line and the other half submerged, because when you flood it will soak into the half above the line still but not cause it to be water logged, it just gives better aeration to the roots once they get bigger, because if they are fully submerged, even if for only 10-15 min you are limiting the amount of oxygen the roots can actually get.

You can also submerge them up to 3/4 below the flood line if you want, its just preference at that point. Doesnt really make any major difference once your roots grow big, but in the beginning before they get big roots your plant will do better with more air on the top, even though its hydro imagine soil where the top surface is dry but the soil further down is still wet, you want the cubes to kind of be the same, you dont want your root ball later to be completely submerged later on.

That's exactly the answer I was looking for.
You seem familiar with what I want to do. I have another question.
I have my flood set on a timer every 3 hours during lights on and one flood midway thru lights off. Does this sound about right or should I adjust it one way or the other?
I intend to do a journal if I don't murder them while transplant them.
Thanks

You can do 4 feedings every 3 hrs or 3 feedings every 4 hrs, i know that doesnt 100% answer your question but if they seem to want to feed more then do the 4 times every 3hrs, of they arent heavy feeders then 3times every 4 hrs. You can change that up at any time during growth! But once you go into flower you might want to do 4 times ever 3hrs, because your plants will be big, have a big root structure and want to feed more often!

As far as when the lights go off it depends on the temps when ur lights are off, and in the beginning they wont be feeding or drying off much because they're small, but once they get big you might want to give them 2 feeding on the night cycle just to make sure they dont dry out on you! You will know right away whether 1 time is not enough for them because if you go into your room when they get bigger before the first on light cycle feeding starts and they are drooping then you need to do 2 feedings probably every 6 hrs.

Thats dependent on ur plants, just go in the room when ur lights first turn on and check on them from time to time, your plants will tell you what they want!

Also in VEG when your doing 18/6 light cycle you can feed them every 3-4hr because they only feed mostly when the lights are on!

I ran every HYDRO system you could imagine for years! If you have any further questions just let me know, ill be more then happy to help!

also if you have the ability to I would recommend printing this picture out and posting on the wall outside the room

Transplant is complete. I thought it smelled like MJ in my grow room, but I thought it was wishful thinking. But I got a good whiff of the wedding cake transplanting it, and it already smells great. Now will see if I didn't wound them to bad or (God forbid) murder them.
They originally sprouted on the 18th. Wish me luck!
