To speed up water absorption when I get compacted soil (I grow in ground) I take a pitchfork and poke it in about 5-6 times around my plants. There’s minimal root damage and the holes allow for rapid water infiltration and provide oxygen to root zones. I’ll do this several times a month if needed and have never had plant problems with insects or mold.

+1 on aeration with a pitchfork and i drill holes in the containers, lots of holes. For slower watering, fill a two or three liter bottle with water and jam it in the soil.

You can use a pvc with holes jammed in the soil and a few hoses to setup an automatic waterer if times an issue , if not i would just aerate the soil and do a slight pre water then full water how you're doing now. I water similar to this because of the very distinct wet/dry cycle.
