Those are tree trunks! Rod, I'm sure you're more advanced in your knowledge than me, so this probably isn't new info for you. A couple of years ago, I lost half a plant because of black mold that formed underneath my duct tape bandage of a split that happened at a fork of the the main stem. I left the duct tape way too long. It might be time to strip off that duct tape and replace it with something that breathes.
