My buddy gave me an “auto” that he started in a solo cup, but it’s just a single stem with a couple leaves, no branches lol. Anyone seen this before? Is this just how autos grow?

Needs some tlc for sure but never seen this before where it grows straight up and doesn’t put out branches. At first I thought it was a clone but was told it’s an auto from seed. Guess we’ll see what happens lol. One stick with a bud on top?It looks like it needs some TLC. So, I suggest gradually increasing its nutrients to see how it recovers.
No just some purple striping. Is the stem brown?
I've seen plants emphasize the main stem when they're low on the things they need to grow. Without knowing what the previous owner did, we can only guess. It could be any of several things, like water, light, nutrients, or whatever. A plant's main purpose in life is to reproduce, so if it doesn't have much, it'll put what it has into growing the main stem.Needs some tlc for sure but never seen this before where it grows straight up and doesn’t put out branches. So, if this were my plant and out of curiosity, I'd probably give it low doses of basic nutrients to see how it responds. It might do okay, but it might be getting too late in the growing season to get any bud from it.
