Being an outside grower for many years, I’ve dealt with bud rot many times including this year. It can be recognized at a very early stage by looking for one very distinct clue…if you spot a single drooping or wilted leaf when all other leaves around it on the bud look normal, you found bud rot. Inspect the bud closely and pull away from the stem and you’re likely to see brown fuzz at the bud-stem intersection. Cut off that bud and keep an eye on the rest of that stem. If bud rot continues to spread on that branch cut off the branch. The key is to be extremely vigilant looking at the buds multiple times a day. Sometimes you don’t see rot in morning light but afternoon light reveals it. Point is…STAY VIGILANT! Good luck all.

Great advice!! I’m also a fan of spraying diluted H2O2 all over where rot was removed to disinfect the surrounding areas.

FYI…today I found that very early sign of bud rot so I took some pics to show that one wilted leaf among the healthy ones. In the same vane as “where’s Waldo” find the wilted leaf. I dug into the bud and found the very early start of BR…too small to photograph but it was there.

I would like some help identifying if my buds have bud rot or mold. My friend an experienced grower thought it did. Any help is appreciated.
