I run hydroton in 5" net pots in my dwc. I've tried a few ways to go mediumless most ones involving plastic or panda film to hold the plants instead of netpots. The seal is never very good so water works it's way into places I don't want it, it just isn't quite good enough.

I haven't ran this new setup yet but I think it should work.
Hole from the old 5" netpots in the lid of the buckets.
6" planter pot from the home improvement store, bottoms cut out.
Foam "camping pad" from walmart for about $5, cut into circles that fit snugly into the pots.
I clone in 2" neoprene collars, then put these into the holes in the bigger foam circles.
Pots fit snugly into 5" hole and sit about half way down into the hole, half above giving more usable space for roots and water in the buckets.

From my testing so far it should work, planning to do the next run this way.
