Welcome to The Backward Season

This season’s grow is called *The Backward Season* because I’m flipping the script on how I usually run things. Normally, I grow indoors in coco-heavy blends using hydro-style feeds. But this time? I’m running soil indoors and coco outdoors—just to see what happens when I challenge my own habits and try something new with familiar genetics.

I’ll be growing some strains I know well—White Widow and Sour Diesel—alongside a couple of fresh picks, all while testing out different mediums and environments. Last year I ran WW and SD indoors in coco, so this year I’m switching it up: White Widow moves into soil indoors, and Sour Diesel heads outside into a custom “Black Coco” blend with organic dry amendments.

The idea is to explore how these strains express themselves when the environment shifts and to deepen my understanding of soil cultivation. I’ve got a hydro background, so this is my first serious run using amended soils indoors, and my first attempt at using a custom coco-amend mix for full-term outdoor plants. Usually, I’d run a 70/30 coco/perlite mix with automated fertigation—this season, I’m leaning more on biology and slow-release nutrition.

The central goal of this grow is small-batch feminized pollen production. I’ll be reversing one White Widow and one Sour Diesel plant using silver thiosulfate (STS), then using that pollen to create:

- **Feminized White Widow seeds** (WW × WW) — S2
- **Feminized Sour Diesel seeds** (SD × SD) — S2
- A new batch of **WW × SD F1 hybrids** — I started this cross last season and want to expand the pheno hunt. It’s not a flagship breeding project, just a continuation of something that’s been promising so far.

🛠️ Grow Setup Overview

Room 1 (R1):
- **Size:** 4'x8' space with a 4'x4' active canopy
- **Light:** Spider Farmer full-spectrum LED
- **Climate:** Controlled temperature and humidity, filtered intake
- **Plants:** 3 × **White Widow (Fem)** – one will be reversed
- **Medium:** 7-gallon fabric pots with a layered mix of **Fox Farm Happy Frog (top)** and **Ocean Forest (bottom)**
- **Watering:** Passive Autopot-style bottom-watering stands with fabric pots placed above
- **Purpose:** Indoor seed production and White Widow reversal using STS spray

Room 2 (R2):
- **Size:** 4'x4' Spider Farmer grow tent
- **Plants:** 3 × **Blue Cheese Auto (Fem)**
- **Medium:** 5-gallon fabric pots with the same HF/OF soil mix
- **Watering:** Bottom-watering via Autopot-style stands
- **Purpose:** Mid-season auto flower run; a new strain for me with a funky flavor profile

Outdoor Grow Area:
- **Structure:** Mesh enclosure on elevated wood pallets for drainage, airflow, and light pest exclusion (birds/squirrels out, bees/insects in)
- **Medium:** **Black Coco** – a custom blend of buffered coco coir and organic dry amendments designed to act like soil
- **Plants:**
- 3 × **Sour Diesel (Fem)** – one will be reversed
- 5 × **Pineapple Kush (Fem)** – first time running this cultivar
- **Watering:** Manual root-zone irrigation or foliar spray for IPM (though I still prefer to hand spray)
- **Purpose:** Outdoor full-term flowering; Sour Diesel reversal and seed production; Pineapple Kush grown out to evaluate its expression in amended coco

I’ve worked with White Widow and Sour Diesel enough to feel confident running them in new ways. They’re also the backbone of a few personal projects I’ve been slowly refining.
The Blue Cheese Auto adds something different—quicker cycle, unique flavor—and gives me a chance to get a harvest in while the photoperiods are still stacking. Pineapple Kush is a bit of a wildcard, but I liked the vibe of adding something tropical and mellow to the mix.

There’s a lot to figure out this run—from how the amended coco holds up outdoors, to how the plants respond to soil indoors, and of course, how the pollen project goes. I’m excited to document the process and talk it through with anyone following along. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about learning, experimenting, and having some fun with it along the way.

I've just popped the seeds in their rooting cubes, so the show will be starting shortly. Stick around for updates on the reversals, pollination, and pheno notes. There’s going to be a lot to learn and explore as the season unfolds, and I look forward to all the advice and insights you all will provide!

I'm hooked already! I have some coco/perlite sitting around and was also thinking about using it outdoors, but damn powdery mildew around here always wins.

I can say from experience, there's definitely a non-zero chance of PM where I'm at as well. I plan to put down a mulch top layer over the outdoor bags. I was told it should help with mildew and deter pests attracted to the soil-like mix. Only time will tell if it works out for me 😃

So far 9 of the 14 seeds have sprouted. I transplanted 8 of the 9 (3x White Widow, 3x Sour Diesel, 2x Blue Cheese Auto) into little jiffy cups. The indoor plants are in Happy Frog, and the SD are in my seedling mix.

10oz dry Coco (expanded to about 2.5 LB with 1.5L spring water) Buffered with 15mL of CalMag
8-10oz Perlite
32oz Worm Castings
1oz Kelp Meal
0.5oz Alfalfa Meal
1oz Crab Meal
0.5oz Neem Seed Meal

One of the Pineapple Kush has sprouted as well (not in a cup yet), and it looks like a couple others are trying to poke out as well, so I will hopefully transplant more by the weekend.

In my life i have seen 10 diaries with coco/soilmix and all of them had problems late in veg soo it would be interedting too see what happens in your case. Good luck

I've seen that trend in layered soil (or soil-like) grow diaries as well. I think a lot of people run into issues right as the roots start pushing down into the hotter bloom layer — nutrient lag, pH shifts, or roots just hesitating at the boundary. I’ve tried to dial in the middle layer of my outdoor mix to carry the plants through veg without running out of steam, and made sure the bottom mix is milder than something like Ocean Forest so it doesn’t burn fresh roots. I buffered the coco, kept the structure consistent, and I’ll probably feather the layer edges for my indoor plants in HF/OF a bit to smooth the transition.

We’ll see how it plays out. I appreciate the good luck! I’m hoping all the prep work pays off and we'll cruises through that late veg zone without too much drama 🤞

I’ll be here in the back watching ! Sure I’ll learn something along the way sounds like you have a plan good luck outdoors Mother Nature can be a pain some days 🫶🪴

We've now got 11/14 seeds transplanted. One of the Pineapple Kush looks like it died off as it was sprouting. One Pineapple Kush and One Blue Cheese Auto are still working on poking out their sprout.

That brings my overall success rate with Royal Queen Seeds down to 83.3% One thing I've noticed with their seed stock is the variability in time it takes to sprout, even within the same seed group. About half the time their seeds shoot up and you can get them transplanted within a week of germinating them. The other half of the time they're some of the slowest sprouting plants I've ever seen. Last grow it took near 2 weeks for one of the seeds (nicknamed sleepy) to get her head out. She almost got tossed as a dud! Has anyone else seen this, or is it just me and a little bad luck?

Don't get me wrong, I still like RQS, but I've not had that same problem with other breeders. It really throws things off when a couple of your plants decide to sleep in!

I feel like every coco grower such as myself dreams of mixing on some amendments and soil once in a while and getting the same results But I also have never seen anyone do it successfully

This being said. I hope it works out love the strains. I got some pineapple og kush going in coco indoors right now lol also a big fan of sour so good luck!

Dang, and I just spent a hundo there for some beans... 😑

For your mesh enclosure I think you'll be happier making it a bug barrier too. Here's one I built. I made it mainly to keep some of the bugs away. Then when I was a couple weeks from harvest a rat chewed through the screen and stole some branches, so I repaired the damage and added mesh around the bottom.

That thing is cool! Looks a little short, though. How tall is that? I am expecting the SD to get pretty lanky outdoors 5-6 ft wouldn't surprise me. To your point though, you're probably right. I may add a finer mesh at some point. I was going to be doing this is a greenhouse but that plan ran into a timing issue, so mesh enclosure it is! We are nothing if not adaptable in this hobby 😁

I think that's a reasonable investment. Like I said, it could just be me having a bit of bad luck. They run some crazy good deals so it's hard for me to bite my thumb at them too hard. Even if my actual success rates settles at around 90% over the seeds I have from them, that's still in the realm of acceptable. Now if one of these more expensive boutique breeders didn't hit at least 95%, I'd be in their inbox! $30 a seed? Good lord, that's a lot of money!

Ah, ok! Thank you for the calibration! There was a doofus that showed up here on the farm recently shit-talking RQS, but they were defensive, combative, and "head-in-sand," and blaming all their issues on the seeds.

Good thing is, I got some BOGO deals and even an 80% germination rate wouldn't grind my gears. ✌🏻

Here's what I have coming...

Amnesia Haze - Number of seeds: 5 $54.57
Shining Silver Haze - Number of seeds: 5 $48.15
OG Kush - Number of seeds: 5 $0.00
Shining Silver Haze - Number of seeds: 5 $0.00
Recycled Grinder 1 $0.00
