In my opinion, it is always better to elevate the pot on something! I use a couple pieces of PVC! When you put them directly on the ground, you are cutting off an awful lot of drainage and evaporation! So the pot doesn’t dry out as evenly as possible! Once the plant gets big enough to contribute to drying out the pot through transpiration then it’s not as big a deal!
The thing that worries me about your climate is that your plants veg so hard back there they are going to be massive anyway! You’re right! We will see!
