My mother is growing an outdoor plant and for some reason she kept trimming all the main fan leaves early before the flowering stage(stating that more energy will be directed to the Bud's fan leaves, I know this is wrong)she basically lollipoped it and now, 3 weeks into flowering, she's trimmed the fan leaves from right at the buds. I'm going to take a picture and tell me if this is terribly wrong please. I keep telling her to stop everytime she does it, but she just writes me off, saying she bought it, but I can't stand to see such a pretty plant butchered like this. Im worried it won't finish properly, and need her to know

Trimmed too much in my opinion. Although it is a technique used by many growers, but usually done with indoor grows that have very limited space.

At least you won't have any airflow issues. 😁

The whole "it focuses energy to buds" is bro science. Plants need those fan leaves so they can perspire more and therefore take in more water. The more they can perspire at a proper rate, the more they will take in water and with it nutrients. Less fan leaves = less water taken in = less nutrients = less bud weight.

Now removing lower bud sites that won't produce much will allow the plant to focus what it does take in on remaining bud sites.

Pretty aggressive but if she has been growing weed and that's how she likes it then just let your mom do her thing. Or you could tell her you found this awesome website called thcfarmer.com where people are sharing their growing experience so everybody grows better weed.

I've run into deficiencies before that hit the fans and not the buds and I've grown them with them almost all removed because of it. I'm not proud of those grows but they produced great smoke just fine, they just looked like groomed poodles. 🤣

From the stretchy thin aspect of the main stem she really just lowered the already low yield potential. Being outdoors is sometimes a crap shoot. Where I live outdoors was so poor I had stunted tomatoes and strawberry flowers till August 5.

Far too much of a defoliation, the fans are your solar panels, sugars are just trim, they do some photosynthesis but a fraction of what the fans will, she should survive but yeild will greatly suffer

This is where I want to be currently 2 - 2.5 weeks into flower the next defol will be in about a week maybe 1/3 of the lower fans will be removed and any straggler colas in the canopy but everything else stays

What strain is that with an arm growing out of it? I’m looking for a strain with a leg growing out of it.

It doesn't seem she's convinced by words, so you could try a different approach. Offer to grow one next year next to hers as a friendly competition. Let her defoliate her plant her way and you do your plant your way. Compare the results.

human behaviour guy here, the relationship dynamic between the two of you, that being mother and child, can become difficult to navigate when discussing rights and wrongs. My advice for her on the trimming is as above, too much, for this scenario. My advice for you, explain to her the incredible wealth of knowledge from the experienced growers here, then allow her to read these inputs, a far smoother approach which greatly assists with learning new info and correcting the old. If you have a sis, do you actually listen to her well meaning advice, maybe, maybe not, I don't. Best of luck for you both, and love your mother, and remember, love is action not words alone.

Hell yeah, get the competition going. Having the direct comparison may be the only thing to convince her. She should have no reason to turn it down, unless legality plays a part. If she does turn it down, then it may mean she suspects your are correct and doesn't want to admit it.

Back in the late 70's I made a similar mistake.
This is what my plants look like these days.
