Maryland looks like it’s in for another summer of battling spotted lanternflies. Last year, I had just one plant growing outside, and I found myself constantly hunting them down—they’re sneaky and love to hide by shifting to the opposite side of a stalk or branch. They caused some damage, but thankfully I was still able to get a decent harvest.

This year, I’d really like to stay ahead of the problem. Do you have any suggestions for keeping spotted lanternflies off my plant? I’ve been thinking about covering it with some kind of screen or mesh cloth, but I’m open to any ideas that might help. Thanks in advance!

Fellow Marylander. I'm an indoor grower but them spotted lanternflies are everywhere.

I'd say the nets are worth a shot as long as the little black ones don't get in before they change.

Last year, I stayed on top of it by checking the plants twice a day and managed to keep the lanternflies under control. This year, I’m going to give netting a try and see how well it works. I usually grow indoors, but I’m hoping to cut down on the electric bill a bit and let Mother Nature take over as the grow light and air filter for a while. 😄

They are all over the main stems of my plants but don't seem to really eat much The purpose of the terps are actually to repel pests and they seem to make the plant less tasty to them I just spray them off with water.
