Hey all. I’ve got an 18-inch plant in a spare room, under an LED grow light I hung from a ladder. It started with a seed I found in some shake; have no clue what strain.

Anyway, I’ve ordered some fish emulsion. Have been lighting 12 on/12 off, watering a little bit every other day, but have no clue what to do otherwise. Is it time to top?

All advice welcome.

I would start right here!
Welcome to the farm
Hit those 3 horizontal bars up top at the the farm header.
Brings up a list. Scroll down to learn and begin your journey on growing cannabis.
Your plant looks fine right now but will soon need a more complete nutrition choice than fish emulsion.
I would start with nutrition as a topic
If you would like to document your grow look around and find forums and then look for grow diaries.
Follow the instructions on starting your own diary.
If you are just browsing the forums and topics and you find a specific grower you can follow them by clicking on their avatar and hitting the follow and if they are an annoying twit you can ignore them.
For specific problems or questions post your own question do not bomb another members thread.
Good luck and enjoy the ride.

Good

What do you want to grow? do you want light fluffy airy buds with very little kick or do you want some kick ass weed? 1 requires very little work the other requires a complete feed line with all the nutrients the plants need. You can stick it out in the sun, water regularly and end up with crap or feed everything it needs when it needs it. I'd recommend you look for a nutrient company you trust and use their full line up to grow some real weed.

Could you offer some nutrition recommendations? I’m flying blind. Thanks for your reply.

Each person has there own preference when it comes to nutes.

Some prefer synthetic bottled nutes others prefer a more organic style with top dressing albeit you can buy organic bottled nutes

which you prefer is your choice

I myself only use guano that’s just my choice not a recommendation switching the type for witch ever stage of grow I am in
I don’t have to add Cali mg because my water has plenty nor do I need to ph my water because it’s all organic

most bottled nutes come in a veg version & a flower version

try read up on nutrition ( Npk ) it will make it easier for you in the longer run

Of course I could recommend something like bio bizz or something similar however you could walk out of the hydro shop with everything bar the kitchen sink ( wasting money & could easy mess up your plant ) as some of these bottled nutrients have a 10 bottle line & some will fall for the trap & buy the whole line witch is a expensive way to grow never mind unnecessary.

Rem when you go to a hydro shop the guys going to be friend you or seems like so however there doing it because they get a bouns for selling & I promise 99% will try sell you as much as they can

I know that to be a fact as I have serval friends who do work in hydro shops
Some will even try sell you a bags of co2 witch is laughable at least as you need tanks & a sealed environment

so your best reading up & knowing what you want & what’s being sold as hype & not really necessary

& no I don’t recommend topping try some lst imo

I’m agnostic on organic. Just looking to make some buds out of a seed I found. What are one or two essentials I could order from Amazon?

There are no hydro shops to speak of around here; weed ain’t legal in this state.

If you have a home depot or a garden center nearby go there with your phone.
Find the nutrition isle.
Find the bags of organic nutrition it will be labeled as such.
When you find the line brand name Google it in the following manner..
Dr Earth organic cannabis feed schedule
Plane magic cannabis feed schedule
Biobizz cannabis feed schedule
Fox farms
Advanced nutrients.

No matter what choice you make as long
as you pick a line of nutrition that knows the difference between plant, potted indoor and indoor cannabis grow.
This will keep you away from miracle grow and others that are just not suited to cannabis.

Check out green leaf. Pretty easy to use and will give the plant what it needs. “Sweet candy” specifically if it’s going into flower. I’ve never used the fish emulsion so you might want to look into them being used together along with whatever nutrient you do end up using.✌️

Huh we have hydro shops all over the place In the uk but we ain’t legal either

Jim’s giving you good advice tbh I’d follow it

Good luck & enjoy the adventure it’s a wild ride 🙂

Thank you very much!

One more ask?

Based on the pics should I be topping or pruning or anything?

If first time growing remember when growing 12/12. That means 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness.
It is just because your setup looks like it could get light when light is off.

Grow bro there is so much to that question. You do not want to top without knowing what it is going to do and what you are going to do about it.
All I can share is my methods and I have a particular system as I have a bad back and keep the plants smaller so I can move them in and out of my tents.

At this point your plant is ready for topping and training, right after you get nutrients and get them in the plant. The reason everyone is helping you is organic growing has a schedule you need to keep and it includes the knowledge that what you need today should have been put in the pot 10 days ago. It takes that much times for the organic nature of the grow to breakdown bits and turn them into nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium plus micro nutes.
For training I do a few things. You have already stretched out the plant more than I like but you can work with it.
First thing is for next time
5-7 days before you want to top take the most dominant fan leaf and cut it off. It will have 5 or 7 leafs and will be the biggest with the most. If there is a smaller one above it still take the biggest with the most.
This is going to send a hormone signal that fans leafs are not working throw more nodes out. This results and a rush of new growth lower down that training will turn into new plant stems and buds
Top the plant. Find a tutorial if you have questions.
Also never asked how big is the pot and is this the final pot cause after you start training it's gunna get stuck in. I recommend 3 gallon pots. I recommend 3 gallon fabric pots.
Top the plant and then lasso the top and pull the plant top sideways. Gently sideways.
IMG 20251031 085828466 HDR

You can see the tops are being pulled over to the side of the pot. Fabric pots are easy to put a hole in to throw green wire over the top and tie off.
Then you start pulling the lower side stems out away from the main stem. Pull them out and tie them off. Any that are already pointing up ( most of yours ) can be coaxed down or turned with plant training fixtures.
IMG 20260312 103425759 HDR
IMG 20260316 113750932 HDR

You can see the inner part of the plant is opened up to the lights. This causes growth.
Training is constant daily .
IMG 20260330 070857535 HDR

See how far they are out? Now we let them turn up. Let all these stems start to turn up but keep the stem way out away from the main stem. Should turn into an arc of stems all around the plant
IMG 20260403 060638175 HDR

Now when your plants have made a few inches turn to 12 12 lighting to initiate flowing and wait for puff balls.
IMG 20260411 094935825 HDR

Now each one of those puff balls is going to stretch and climb. Let em go but we need to watch the lights. If the suddenly get a burst and start to stretch get some more light on them. If they are making a flat mess stacking up less light.
These techniques take time to master.
This is the 2 plants right now current grow.

Thank you! Very helpful.

It’s a 5-gallon Home Depot bucket. There’s a 4 inch layer of gravel about 2/3 from the top, with drainage holes in the bottom.

As long as you watch your watering that's fine. If you are gunna train a plant here are some things.
Drill 1/4 inch holes around the top for tying off. Fabric pots I can just poke a hole you can't .

I've been at this a long time and all that was available to me was when I started indoors in the 90's was General Hydroponics 3 part. I'm still using it plus some more of their additives, its readily available on Amazon although expensive its a good nutrient line in soil, or any variety of hydro styles.
