Here's ma problem so wanting practical experience, I've done the math (well xl did it) but I need practical experience.

I have a 250W HPS Security light 20-25 feet up and about 145' from where I want to put some plants. It does light up the area very very faintly where I want to put a couple. It's a good grow spot because of hours of sun and within my fence line to keep deer out so that's the dilemma.

So for all you suburbanite growers how much does your neighborhood light pollution screw with you and for all you country folk what's the closest you have a light source that cast even faint light where plants are and does it screw with the plants?

Gray, I have had a few plants within about 100’ of my outdoor spotlights. I had one reveg on me. Truthfully I’m not sure if it was the light or the lineage. I ended up parking a trailer in front of th, put a blanket on the lay down tailgate, obviously locked in the up right position to block the spotlight. It seemed to work. Did not deal with any re-veg and it didn’t affect the sun to them.

if you can read a book than it’s too bright,.

I have his paper on that and 10 nanomoles (0.01 µmol ⋅ m⁻² ⋅ s⁻¹) is his benchmark which equates to 2-3X more than a full moon on a clear night. But in practical application terms I'm trying to get "mine was 50 feet and don't fucking do this" or "mine is 150' and it's all good."

Or as @GNick55 if you can read a book it's too bright...so guess who's reading

I think busby said a large print book. And plants dont seem to see reflected light as well as they see direct light. So a full moon shining on a snow covered field seems to be invisable to them. Lumens but not enough lux. This is where lux comes into play.👍

And spectrum comes into play too and the interplay of red vs far red vs infrared and HPS spectrum is well identified as containing red and infrared. And that's all well and good but in the end, KISS. And....
