hi all,

My wife and I are OMMP (MMJ) patients in Oregon and have decided to grow our own. I will stay within our legal limit (12 adult plants). Other than a pathetic 1-cycle effort when I was in high school, I have no experience as a grower. I'm a curious person by nature, and expect to make my share of mistakes at the beginning, but am enthusiastic about the challenge.

I've got some basic carpentry skills and a warehouse with water and good electrical, so hopefully I can get something growing.

I appreciate all the smart and dedicated people who take time to share information on this site. It is a fantastic resource and I have already learned a lot from you guys. I hope I'll be able to contribute something useful someday soon.

happy farming.

Welcome buddy. From Portland myself. Let me know if ya need any help with clones or any equipment. I get a pretty good discount at a few shops.

I also can help you with nice strains. Currently have the Blackberry (the super dank dank pheno) also a staple in my garden is Shishkaberry (Yummy is all I can say) also playing with Hashberry (Tastes great less filling) Also just got Dr. Funkenstein, Chemdog 2 and finally C99

No charge for these clones.

For a first timer please do not try and be a hero and go for grand slam at bat your first time up to the plate. Like Dynamite said, keep it simple stupid!!!

If you honestly have no clue or just the basic skills I truely recomend getting 3 1k lights for 12 plants. Use number 7 smart pots or cheap #7 pots. I recomend using Black Jack soil (It is made for growing marijuana) Follow there recomendations and you will get a very good harvest just having to water only from veg to flower to finish.
After you have a succesful harvest or 2 under your belt I would play with other methods.
It's all about getting meds in a short matter of time when you are sarting out. Also do not grow all 12 at one time. You can start off with 6 in flower and have 6 big plants vegging in the veg room. 30 days after the plants have been in flower put the other giant 6 plants in the flower room and you will harvest 6 plants and with the Blackjack recipe you should get at least 8 ounces a plant equaling 42 ounces per 30 days.
You first 6 plants you grow do not get them big or veg them long. Veg for a week or 2 keep them small and flower them, get some meds ASAP. While your other 6 are vegging you will have some meds to smoke instead of throwing all 12 in flower and vegging them for a month or 2 then putting them in flower for 60 days and having to wait at least 4-5 months for your harvest.

I hope this helps you and you get your meds soon.

Smokey, thanks for the suggestions and your generous offer of help. Very kind.

Following the advice from you and others, I plan to start with soil, since it's the most forgiving medium. As much as I am in awe of what the DWC folks are doing, I know I need to learn to walk before I can run.

Will look into BlackJack, hadn't heard of it before.

I'll start a thread in the Growroom Design & Setup forum, with some pics of the room I'm building, so that people can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

You dont have to start with soil... It's not that hard to start with hydro, just read a book or something to get the basics... I am still a big noob. But I read "how to grow great marijuana" and then bought all the stuff for my little closet grow and bought some autoflower seeds and this is where I am now at 54 days in from seed. It's not too hard with a small setup like this as long as you buy a good ph and ppm meter and make sure everything is in check each day.
I would totally recommend hydro over dirt... Dirt is just dirtier in every way obviously.

I was also trying to point out start up costs. In my opinion to hydro correctly you need a few items before hand. Those items cost some bucks. You will need Ph meters or go cheap and get the liquid drops you compare to a colored chart, a PPM meter or a combo PH PPm meter with temp.
With DWC you might want to think of a water chiller and that is another $500 or so, Then the cost of the tubing to build the DWC which is very cheap.
I was just saying get a few crops under your belt and some money from those harvests to save and get more and better equipment.
If your going to do it, do it right the first time. Do not skimp on anything in hydro or it will show.

My meaning for DWC is Death Without Cause!

DWC is sexy as hell dont get me wrong and puts off nice harvests.
