Self-contained a/c's aren't new but I wasn't sure if people knew about them. They are simple to install and cheap, but they just aren't right for everyone's application. You can get them all the way up to 20 tons. Basically the entire a/c is in a single box, blower, evaporator, condenser, and most of the electronics. No freon to deal with at all which is very important for people without much mechanical knowledge.
Here is a picture of a chillking self-contained a/c. To install one of these units you place them outside either on the roof or up against an exterior wall on the ground. Hook up power, mount the thermostat inside, run thermostat wire outside to unit and plug it in. There are 2 areas to hook up ducting, the supply air and the return air. Run the return air to a return air vent with a filter, and the supply air you duct wherever you want.
