So you thought the threat from the nuclear meltdowns in Japan was over, right? Not exactly. Because these idiots built a swimming pool on the fourth floor of a building in an earthquake zone, and then filled it with hundreds of spent nuclear fuel rods, the risk hasn't gone away, it's now clear we're just another 7.0+ tremblor away from a catastrophe some 400 times worse than Chernobyl. Remember that one? Yeah, they had to shut down dairy farming and other food production in most of Europe... Now, crank that up by 400 times and the only place that's safe is a fallout shelter. Hope you packed some beans... Link here:

The Top Short-Term Threat to Humanity: The Fuel Pools of Fukushima

But hey kids, we're just getting started! If you think that one's scary, here's my favorite; thousands of nuclear reactors melting down simultaneously worldwide, as a result of the destruction of the global power grid caused by a natural solar phenomena known as an 'extreme geomagnetic disturbance.' These are very real, yet rare enough for politicians to explain away why relatively cheap and simple fixes to our power grid aren't necessary, but they're gambling with yours and everything else's life on our fragile little planet. Except maybe cockroaches. Link here:

The Government Spends Trillions On Unlikely Threats … But Won’t Spend a Billion Dollars to Prevent the Very Real Possibility of Global Nuclear Catastrophe

And you thought you needed to go watch a movie to get the shit scared out of you.

I was against nuclear power in the 60's and 70's and was laughed at for it. Now look at the mess.

Mother Earth will do whatever is needed to cleanse herself..and that includes shaking us humans off like a bad case of fleas. When the end is near a new beginning will emerge. In the meantime I try to stay positive and enjoy each day.

I too have asked a pointed question about nuclear power since I was young; 'what if the plants melt down, what if the worst case scenario happens...' I just don't think that Mammon or cheap power is worth throwing our children's grandchildren under the bus for.

Even at the ridiculously high price of $25 per installed square foot, think of how much solar power we could have now if we spent our nuclear power dollars on that instead.

honestly i dont understand why we even need nuclear energy anymore??? this is technology from the 50's. would anyone but a daily driver car from the 50's??? how bout buy a house from the 50's???

I was reading an article about a power box used by google and some top end companies. said to produce massive amounts of energy and it only needs natural gas. Hell imagine how much energy we could have if we tapped into more solar and wind and even that oceanic wave thingy. so many alternatives to nuclear. honestly i just dont get it anymore..

so true, now they just need to lower the cost of solar.... riiiiight

lol..i had a guy come to my house to give me a quote on a 10k solar setup. i knew about the price drop for solar panels and told him to hook me up especially with the price drop. he gave me a quote for $40,000. bunch of bs. the problem isnt with the parts its with the installers.

Here in CO solar installers rip folks off bigtime. I set up my own stuff and started with a a bare-bone setup for 2 grand. From there I added on as I went. I am 100% off grid.
A few info books and any fool can pop up free juice. Fuck those "experts."

I knew when it happened that the fukushima disaster was a deathblow aimed at japan. I knew before it was on the news. The day it happened i was outside and suddenly gravity pulled me to the ground, I collapsed and I thought I was dying. I sat on the ground and realized that we were already dead, but at the same time I did not care because "we" had already won. Can't explain it other than to say if the most terrible evil people unleash their worst against us, they lose and we win because we are innocent. Later that day I saw the japan earthquake and nuclear plant explosion on TV and realized what had happened. It was a ritual carried out to destroy japan and other parts of the world through the radioactivity released from fukushima on 3/11. Waves reported to be 33 feet, etc. The significance of the numbers tells you who is behind it. It will take a long time to realize the true scope of the disaster because radiation effects set in after the fact.

An old 50's street rod is a far different thing than a nuclear reactor; for one, you don't have to drive it if you don't want to. Two, there is nothing inherently more dangerous about it than there is about modern cars. And millions of people live in homes built in and long before the 1950s all across this country, with no ill effects. Hell, the older houses are often safer since they weren't built with, for example, contaminated chinese drywall!

There is a big difference between the responsible re-use of older things and the terrible ongoing danger of an idea that was bad when it was first proposed, rammed down the throats of a purposefully misled public, and is now aging and suffering from neglect. There is no old car or old house than can kill millions of people- but EVERY nuclear power plant on Earth has that potential. ALL of them, whether they were built in 1952- or yesterday.

That 'power box' is called a fuel cell stack. Natural gas- or any hydrocarbon- is split into hydrogen and the hydrogen is chemically combined with oxygen and in the process releases electricity. It's about 80% efficient, and the waste products include some heat (less than burning, by far!), water and CO2. Period. This makes a coal fired powerplant look like the dinosaur it is. Ballard Power Systems is a leading manufacturer of fuel cells, and their website says they build models small enough for residential use. I inquired about getting one, and their response was that they don't sell them in the US. I wonder why...

That was George Carlin's take. He used to poke fun as people who wanted to 'save the earth'. . .the earth was around long before us, and will be around long after us.

In a move that shows just how seriously the Japanese government- and unquestionably its people- take the ongoing threat of nuclear contamination, not only have ALL nuclear reactors in Japan undergone thorough testing and inspections to determine their vulnerability to 'severe events', but in fact Japan will shut down, at least temporarily, ALL nuclear power generation in the country as of May 6. It must be said that this is an eminently reasonable course of action considering the risks involved. Can you imagine something like this happening in the US? Fuggedabouddit...

Article follows link:
Japan to be without nuclear power after May 5

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan will within weeks have no nuclear power for the first time in more than 40 years, after the trade minister said two reactors idled after the Fukushima disaster would not be back online before the last one currently operating is shut down.
Trade Minister Yukio Edano signalled it would take at least several weeks before the government, keen to avoid a power crunch, can give a final go-ahead to restarts, meaning Japan is set on May 6 to mark its first nuclear power-free day since 1970.
"If we thoroughly go through the procedure, it would be (on or) after May 6 even if we could restart them," Edano told a news conference, adding that whether they can actually be brought back online is still up to ongoing discussions.
The crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, where a huge earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 triggered radiation leaks, has hammered public faith in nuclear power and prevented the restart of reactors shut down for regular maintenance checks, with all but one of 54 reactors now offline.
Nuclear power accounted for about 30 percent of Japan's electricity demand before the Fukushima crisis.
In discussing restarts of the No.3 and No.4 reactors at Kansai Electric's <9503.T> Ohi nuclear power plant, in western Japan, the first to clear the government's technical review on resilience against a severe event, Tokyo has said it wants local backing even though it is not legally required.
The hosts of the Ohi plant - the governor of Fukui prefecture and mayor of Ohi town, some 360 km (225 miles) southwest of Tokyo - told Edano on Saturday that some conditions should be met before they can make a decision.
These included a safety review by an expert panel formed by the prefecture and backing from areas neighbouring Fukui that are becoming increasingly vocal about possible radiation damage in the event of an accident at any of the 13 reactors in Fukui.
Exactly when Fukui Governor Issei Nishikawa and Ohi Mayor Shinobu Tokioka will make decisions is unclear.
Members of the expert panel will be visiting the Ohi plant on Wednesday and are likely to meet several more times before they reach a conclusion, while the Fukui assembly may meet as early as next week to discuss whether they can back the restarts, Masao Sato, a member of the assembly, told Reuters.
Ohi town told Reuters in March that it conditionally backed the restart. Fukui governor Nishikawa told Edano on Saturday that, while the government has addressed some of Fukui's concerns, more discussions were needed on safety.
While a looming summertime power crunch is a headache throughout Japan, Kansai Electric's service region, including Japan's second biggest metropolitan area of Osaka, is particularly vulnerable as nuclear power met more than 40 percent of power needs prior to the Fukushima crisis.
Electricity generated by the Ohi No.3 and 4 reactors accounted for around 1.8 percent of the total amount of electricity generated in Japan in the business year 2009/10, data from the trade ministry and the Federation of Electric Power Companies in Japan showed.
Edano said that the government may have to protectively come up with plans for rolling blackouts.
"We absolutely cannot let power go out suddenly," he said.
The governors of Shiga and Kyoto prefectures, bordering Fukui, on Tuesday outlined recommendations for the central government on restarting reactors, including publicising views from independent organisations on reactor safety.
The last time Japan saw a nuclear power-free period was the five days ended on May 4, 1970, when the two reactors then existing were both shut for maintenance, according to the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan.

Radiant Energy

Can you post a link to that? I'm interested in seeing it.

I am absolutely convinced that if we as a country spent as much on solar panels as we have on nuclear power, we'd be energy independent today.

some of the people they wan't us to forget about.

Having read into some of this stuff, it sounds rather suspicious. The box on the table was easily big enough for batteries, for instance. The first thing such claimants have to do is prove they aren't charlatans, and I haven't seen any such proof.

If you want to be energy independent, buy solar panels. Really- it is just that simple today. Buy the panels, and if you don't want to be paying for the installer's profits, put them in yourself. Yes, they're expensive- but during their lifetime they pay for themselves several times over, at today's energy prices. They only continue to get more profitable as time goes on and energy prices rise.

[begin rant]I tire of conspiracist theories about 'evil men' trying to stop 'free energy.' It's all a bunch of carefully layered bullshit, designed to sucker the unwary out of their savings. If there was a shred of real proof to this, energy companies, just like any other corporate entity, are more than happy to pay royalties! THAT'S how real business is done- this is just paranoiac thinking wrapped up in an unprovable promise in an effort to scam money out of people.

Einstein's own work said it best; 'there is no such thing as a free lunch.' He didn't coin the phrase, but his work helping to prove its universal application (the famous E=mc^2 being a central part of this) stands on its own.

We don't need magic to solve the world's energy problems. We don't need conspiracy theories, either. Solar panels are living, working proof that energy can be converted from one obvious form to another and in so doing provide all the power we need. The idea that America is running out of energy is an astoundingly ludicrous proposition, foisted on the stupid and gullible by the greedy.

I'll say it again; if the US had spent as much money installing a solar power grid in this country as we did building out nuclear power, we'd be energy independent today. Period. And, we wouldn't need to spend billions trying to figure out where to bury the insanely radioactive waste of that boondoggle. Or worrying about it poisoning our distant descendants.

Power is EVERYWHERE, we just need to quit wasting so much of it. Here's a shocking example: I live in Colorado, near Coal Creek Canyon, famous to railfans worldwide. Dozens of trains loaded with everything you can think of- but currently mostly coal- run up and down these tracks every day. Physicists have repeatedly shown that if you can convert a fully loaded trains' kinetic energy into heat all at once, the result would be roughly same discharge as that from a small atomic weapon!

Well, the trains on those tracks currently run on diesel fuel, converting the power generated by their huge diesel engines into electricity to power their massive traction motors, currently about 3500 horsepower per locomotive. That's going up the canyon. The trains going down the canyon don't need it, as they have more energy- stored as potential energy, as altitude- than they need. The only way to get rid of it is to run those same electric traction motors in reverse, generating electricity. What is this prodigious amount of predictably available power currently doing? It goes to the roof of the locomotive, where it heats a series of wire coils red hot- exactly like your electric stove- and fans blow that heat out into the atmosphere! SERIOUSLY! Those tracks have been there for decades, and no one has bothered to say, 'gee- maybe we could recover that power and sell it back to the grid!' The power thus generated every day would easily replace all the coal from one of those daily trains currently traveling on those tracks!

In europe, most rail traffic is electrified and they DO recover that energy. It's a significant contribution to the total electrical power generation capacity of Switzerland, because that power replaces the mountains of coal and oceans of oil that would otherwise be needed to drag more trains over the Alps every day. Think of the environmental cost of pollution they're saving, to say nothing of the energy itself. Americans think we're 'the best'- and therefore our arrogance has blinded us to one opportunity after another to save power. We have no one but ourselves to blame for tolerating a system where shortsighted greed runs our businesses and infrastructure.

Why don't our coal generating stations in this country run twice as efficiently as they do, genrating twice the electricity per ton of coal burned? Because the deals worked out with coal mining interests actually mandated that they don't! I've looked into it, it's true! How despicable is that?

We don't need magical 'radiant energy' boxes; we just need some simple damned COMMON SENSE. [end rant]
