I'm going to start doing some tests by re-hydrating old dry trim and blasting it to see if it comes out the same as naturally fresh trim. I know the trichomes also change but I think the darker oils just come from dry trim that breaks down really easy. If you lock up everything in water (besides the trichomes since they are not water soluble obviously) then that should help the butane to be more selective to the oils that you want.

Has anyone tried this strategy with old trim to see if the outcome is any different? I'm surprised I haven't tried it before a few years ago when I was making oil everyday it just never occured to me I was always just trying different purging and whipping methods never did it occur to me that every time I got something really nice it was from super fresh trim.

The only issue with this is wet trim is going to blow out on you. If you can get a pipe with threads on the ends you can buy steel end pieces and drill holes into them to make a solid extractor that will be impossible to blow out.

So you don't think it would make any difference to rehydrate some old trim before running it?

Hey Mustard. Did your re-hydrating technique work at all? I was thinking about the same thing.

It won't lighten the oils color. The oil is darker because it is mostly decarboxylated.

If you want light blonde, start with fresh material,

The color of the oil is also based of the color of the trichheads... the more the trichs age the darker the heads will be

It wont blow out on you if you get a silk screen to put underneath the coffee filters =)

What is then the best way to turn the old trim into something consumable and touchable ?

true again, but the thing is, it has already been pruged out from the material.
I now have about 40 g oil where 10 of them is good quality wax. I thought i could make the allaround thc better in the product and more easily obtain a shatter glass consistence.
At the moment i am pruging it on a stove on between 50-60 celcius.
It just wont get like shatter.
the fun fact is, i have already made shatter with this old trim, and it would snap and i could strech it without it stick to my finger. But now i just cant get it there.
I am thinking to winterize it in isopropyl 97% alcohol and then purge it on a stove again. Maybe around 110 fahrenheit. idk.
Some experienced help needed

to improve the wax form old trim. is more about using different types of distillation to remove the stuff you don't want in it. you can make the clear from any quality wax. need more equipment like a rotovap not really kitchen type techniques.

Getting blonde extract out of old material is unlikely, unless you exclude the molecules around C-30, which contains the anthro cyanin plant pigments. We haven't been able to do that extracting, but are able to take it out later.

We've successfully done that with both column chromatography and with fractional distillation using a Kugelrohr or Molecular still, but the product is decarboxylated and sticky to the touch.

It's easier to show what I'm talking about with column chromatography, because you can see which fractions the dark color ended up in. There are virtually no C-21 cannabinoids in the first two, or the last three fractions.

You depth of knowledge on concentrates is amazing.

Question for you as per the above pic. Is it ok to use regular coffee filters. I've always read to use unbleached ones.

Also, found out the other day that you and I have a mutual buddy. He was pointing me in the direction of your website as we were talking about closed loop systems.

I typically use commercial sized bleached filters.

I don't see any issues with unbleached, and know some folks feel it is more salubrious to use them, and like using them to make your own coffee, is a personal choice.
