snow and hail, high rainfall increase plant pathogens, indeed many plant pathogens are to be found falling from the sky over winter in snow flakes and hail. We can often see the damage on our plants directly of course, but what we often miss are the dormant spores in our soil systems.

So we plant our tomatoes, lettuce and whatnot as usual, only to find a season of challenges. A good idea before planting up outside ahead of spring, inoculate your soils with a mix of microbes known to suppress many of the painful spores and molds that will certainly cause us harvest losses.
